Kogi West Condemn Billions Earmarked For Dino Melaye Recall Process.... As State Is Owing Backlog Of Salaries And Pensions |PoliFocus
We the hardworking, long abandoned. yet ever patriotic citizens of Kogi West find it completely morally reprehensible that in a State in which workers and pensioners are being owed pension arrears for years now, Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC can callously go ahead and attempt to spend such a vast sum of our national wealth, running into billions of naira on recalling Senator Dino Melaye, whose only offense is that he has an axe to grind with our state Governor over genuine issues one of which is the Governor’s heartless refusal to pay workers and pensioners their salaries and allowances.
We could never had imagined the recall process would gulp such a huge sum of money from state coffers but for the fact that we heard it ourselves from what can only be described as an authentic source – in fact, the horse’s mouth – in the evening of Wednesday, July 5, 2017, on Channels Television program, Politics Today, where no less a top official than one of the National Commissioners, Chief Solomon Soyebi, was tackled by the anchor and forced to reveal the truth!
This can only be described as an act of financial recklessness of the highest order and to imagine that INEC can even contemplate such a monumental waste of government funds just to please a Governor is most condemnable indeed.
The INEC Commissioner claimed that the process envisaged by INEC is in three stages including Verification, Referendum and Bye-election and we do not know if the 1 Billion he mentioned is the cost of the entire process or of each of the three stages separately thereby costing Nigerian taxpayers a huge sum totaling over 3 Billion naira at the end of the day.
Given that in Nigeria, government expenditure on specific projects, programs and activities usually overshoots its budget for such, sometimes by as much as three and up to ten times over, we are therefore looking at expenses of between 5 and 10 billion just to recall Dino Melaye simply because a failed Governor of Kogi like Yahaya Bello says he must go! It is quite clear to us that only fat cats like those in INEC used to living large on taxpayers money at the expense of hardworking Nigerian workers and pensioners will see nothing wrong in deploying billions of public money to a state like Kogi were the Governor has been owing pensioners and workers for years now, just to remove a Senator to please the same Governor!
Even if Dino was guilty of any offense as being claimed by those who prefer to steal bailout funds instead of using them to pay the salaries they were released to the state for, 100 million is still too much to spend on such a frivolous exercise while pensioners and workers are yet to be paid. Can INEC imagine how many lives of Kogi State workers that will be saved with just 100 million being reallocated to paying even just a small part of their salary arrears?
For God’s sake, we don’t have any problem with our Senator. Even the handful of ordinary citizens that might have had any misgivings about him are no longer interested in his recall since they heard of the amount involved which can only be described as an unrivalled degree of madness. Dino has already spent more than two years in the Senate and has less than two years remaining.
There is therefore no need for any hurry to justify the heinous expenditure of such gargantuan amount of taxpayers’ money recalling when the next election is just round the corner and citizens are dying of hunger right, left and center in Kogi State, thanks to a failed administration that cannot pay salaries but can spend billions trying to put a Senator for telling him the truth.
If anybody is truly determined to deal with Senator Dino Melaye, he should wait patiently till 2019 to face him in the election not going through the backdoor in the name of recall at taxpayers expense.
We don’t need any recall in Kogi West even if it is going to cost just 100 milion instead of 1 billion. Even 100 million, not to talk of 1 billion, will go a long way in saving countless lives of hungry and dying citizens anywhere in Kogi especially in Kogi West which has been long abandoned by the state government.
The money must either be used to pay workers and pensioners or be allocated for developmental projects in Kogi West. What we need is development and not recall.
We therefore condemn this expensive demonstration of craziness and by the grace of Almighty God, will do everything in our power to put a halt to it.

Civil Servant With Monthly Salary Of N34,000 Refunds N1.7m Excess Salary |PoliFocus
![]() |
Mrs. Husseina Mohammed |
The screening exercise embarked upon by the Governor Yahaya Bello administration generated so much controversy and confusion, with the accounts of some workers who were not owed any salary arrears credited in huge sums, while some owed as much as 15 months waited in vain for alerts crediting their accounts.
Mrs. Mohammed, who could not contain the surprise package delivered to her account, was cautious, even with the knowledge that her spouse, also a civil servant, was cleared in screening exercise, but still waiting payment of his 16 months salary arrears.
Her phone received an alert one early morning indicating that her account had been credited with almost N1.8million as her monthly salary, which is approximately N34, 000.
The message read: “Salary for the month of March, 2017.”
Husseina, who was surprised, read the message severally and on getting home, narrated her excitement to her husband.
They had a brief family meeting to consider the implication and decided to refund the money, convinced that it was the right thing to do.
The decision to refund the money was not unexpected, especially being an accountant and knowledgeable of the implication of spending the money.
Though a difficult decision, especially with outstanding school fees of their children running into the entire session, but the spouse would not be tempted to do otherwise.
She quickly rushed to the Director General, Bureau of Information and Grassroots Mobilisation, Alhaji Abdulkareem Abdulamlik, explain that she received an alert from her bank in the afternoon of May 21 and discovered that a huge sum had been credited in her favour.
She said she started the process of returning the money to the state government on May 22, adding that the money was paid into the government account with the Lokoja branch of the Zenith Bank Plc.
She then handed over the bank teller and other documents used in paying back the money to Abdulamlik. She pleaded with government to reciprocate her good gesture by paying her husband’s outstanding 15 months salary arrears being withheld over discrepancy in his age declaration, which she said had since been rectified.
Abdulamlik commended Mohammed for her honesty, saying with people like her in society, Nigeria was sure of winning the ongoing war against corruption.
He urged other civil servants and residents of the state to emulate her, adding that her good conduct would not go unrewarded and would be recorded for generation yet unborn to learn and emulate.
Wow! Thus is very commendable!!!!!!
