Anambra Government Blows Hot On Child Hawkers, Threatens To Get Them Arrested |PoliFocus

Anambra State government has warned parents and guardians, who send children to hawk on the streets, threatening to arrest any child hawking during school hours in the state strating from September, this year.



The Commissioner for Social Welfare, Child and Women Affairs in the state, Dr. Victoria Chikwleu gave the warning in Awka, yesterday, during an event to mark the Day of the African Child.

Dr. Chikwelu, who particularly warned parents about the dire consequences of sending out their children to engage in such act, reminded that the state government had declared free education from primary to junior secondary schools in the state.

The Commissioner also appealed to husbands to give adequate protection to children in their homes against any form of maltreatment from their wives, saying any report of treatment would not be taken lightly.


She further appealed to the Heads of various levels of education in the country not to compromise the standard of education to enable the children to obtain the best of education in their lives.

The Speaker of the Children Parliament in the state Master Edden-Rex Abara solicited for equal opportunities to accessing education among the children in the country to improve their lives in future.

Master Ilechukwu Chukwujekwu, who spoke at the event, commended the Federal Government School feeding programme and called on various levels of governments to protect them against abuse and maltreatment from the society.

The celebration of Day of the African Child in Anambra State, with the theme Accelerating Protection, Empowerment and Equal Opportunities for Children in Africa by 2030, featured road show, reading of news, cultural display and drama from the children.
