Foremost leader of the Biafra agitation, late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu has advised Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of IPOB and every pro-Biafra agitators.

He advised strongly that Biafra Republic agitation should be dropped, that Igbos people should have learnt their lessons from the last civil war.
In his words:

"A lot of people will say you were leading the first one, yes! I led the first one.

And I will say it to everyone that I led proudly! the first one.

On this premise, I think Nnamdi Kanu that is being tried for treason should back out in his chosen path and embrace dialogue.

Unity of our beloved country, Nigeria can't be negotiated, together we can all take the country to an enviable height.

United we stand, divided we fall!

N60bn health fund missing - NMA faults 2016 budget

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has expressed shock that N60 billion, equivalent of 1% of consolidated revenue guaranteed by the National Health Act to fund basic health is missing from the 2016 budget, Daily Trust reports.

In a statement a Friday, January 29, president of the NMA, Dr Kayode Obembe said President Muhammadu Buhari’s N6.08 trillion budget only provides N1, 448 per capita health spending, lower than the N1, 546 per capita spending in 2015, compared with a recommendation of N6, 908 by the World Health Organisation.

Obembe stated that it was a sharp departure fromthe prescribed 15% of the national budget for health made in 2001 in a meeting of African Heads of States and Government which Nigeria hosted in Abuja.

He noted that the 3.65% allocation for health in the 2016 budget would “never encourage the advancement of universal health coverage which is the only panacea towards improving availability, access, quality and efficiency of the health services to reduce the disparaging health indices which continue to malign the image of ourcountry in the comity of nations.”

According to him, Tanzania, Rwanda, Swaziland, Ethiopia, Malawi and Central African Republic have all marked up to 15% of their budget for health, according to WHO figures.

The NMA therefore, called on the National Assembly to “urgently review and revise the paltry allocation of N221.7 billion to the health ministry in the 2016 Appropriation Bill.”

“It is on this premise that we call on the National Assembly as the only organ that could mitigate this looming disaster in the healthcare delivery sector in 2016 at this juncture, to look dispassionately without any partisan sentiments at what should be done to substantially increase the allocation to the health ministry in order to deliver better healthcare to the Nigerian people,” said Obembe.

President Buharihad presented a N6.08 trillion budget before a joint session of National Assembly in December 2015. 221.7bn has been allocated to the health sector. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had described the budget as a big fraud and executiveconspiracy tailored towards mortgaging the future of the nation.

  • He bought a television set at the age of 9
  • Bought a bus at the age of 14
  • At 22, he became a school proprietor
  • See how he made his money

Governor Owelle Rochas Anayo Okorocha who is the current Imo State Governor and a frontline cum All Progressives Congress (APC) bigwig was born on 22 of September, 1962 is a Nigerianmulti billionaire and politician from Imo State, Nigeria who won the 6 May 2011 gubernatorial election inImo State and was reelected for his second term on April 11, 2015.

In his first attempt, he ran on theAll Progressives Grand Alliance(APGA) platform[1]and ran on the All Progressives Congressin his second shot. In both occasions, Rochas defeated his closest rival, incumbent governor Ikedi Ohakimand serving Deputy Speaker of the Houseof Representatives, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, by a close margin of votes and had to go for reruns.

Background

Rochas, an Igbo, was born on 22 September 1962 in Ogboko, Ideato South, Imo State. He attended Juladaco High School,Jos(1976-1981). He studied at the University of Jos(1990-1991), obtaining a diploma in Public Administration.

He returned to the University of Jos (1993-1994) to obtain an advanced diploma in Public Administration.
Career positions include President, Nigeria Red Cross Society, President/Founder, Rochas Foundation Inc, President, Rochas Group of Companies Limited, Pro Chancellor, African Business School and Former Chairman, Board of Nigerian Airspace Management Agency.

From Rags to Riches

Rochas Okorocha wasn't born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He was born into a poor family. And as he puts it, “I found out that I was born into a home that is relatively poor from all the definitions of poverty.

So, I understand from the onset that I have a task ahead of me and the name of the game is survival." He said he had to work extra hard to make both ends meet by combining education with street trading.

He said he didn’t had a straight school experience while growing up. He was involved in street trading at one point in time or the other. He said, "Honestly, there has never been a dull moment in my life.

In fact, I engaged in too many things just for the sole purpose to survive.”Okorocha, who acknowledged that he broke even early in life, said “The first one was at a very tender age of my life when I was selling used clothes. I broke even because I was able to buy a bus.

I was able to buy a bus in secondary school and I bought television set in primary school as small as I was from the sale of oranges, coconuts and used clothes.

What I do is that if I sell, I post some of the profits and at the end of the year I buy something with it. So, it has been a worthwhile experience but where I would say I made the first one million dollars, was as a commission agent from the sale of used equipment in Bauchi State where Balfour Beatty was constructing the Balanga Dam.

When the company was winding up I was one of the agents that sold used equipment and I made N1.1 million when it was equivalent to $1 million dollars. And I put the entire money into the business of used cars then later graduated to the sale of new cars to what they called ‘Rochas Motors” but what made me really rich was real estate business.

“At the age of nine I bought a television set, at 14 I bought a bus, at the age of 19/20 I became head of a commercial school, at the 22/23 years I became a proprietor of a school and I went into cement business (BBC) in Gboko, Benue State.

And at the age of 24 plus I got married, at the age of 29 I became a member of National Constitutional Conference, I became a member of Federal Character Commission thereafter then I went to contest for governor and failed and shortly after that I ran for presidency and later became a presidential adviser.

I ran for presidency again. You see, I moved on and on in life with hard work and challenges."

Early political career

Okorocha was a Commissioner on the Federal Character Commission and a Member of the National Constitutional Conference.

When democracy was restored in 1999, Rochas Okorocha competed in the primaries to be People's Democratic Party(PDP) candidate for governor of Imo State, but lost to Achike Udenwa.

He moved to the All Nigeria People's Party(ANPP), and was an unsuccessful candidate for President on the ANPP platform in 2003. He returned tothe PDP, and President Olusegun Obasanjoappointed him as Special Adviser on Inter-Party affairs.

Rochas Okorocha formed the Action Alliance (AA) party in 2005, planning to become a Presidential candidate for the AA in the 2007 elections.

He again returned to the PDP, and in September 2007 indicated that he was interested in becoming PDP National Chairman.

After Governor Ikedi Ohakimdecamped from theProgressive Peoples Alliance(PPA) to the PDP in July 2009, Okorocha denied that Ohakim had taken over the PDP in the state, saying he was named as leader since he was governor, but a proper PDP congress should be held to decide on policy.

Imo state governor Okorocha decamped from the PDP to theAll Progressives Grand Alliance(APGA), to run as APGA candidate for Imo State Governor in the April 2011 national elections.

A few weeks later, in December 2010, the APGA suspended Okorocha from the party over what it described as anti-party activities pending an investigation of his conduct.
It was reported thathe had stormed the Imo State Secretariat of APGA with dozens of thugs, who beat up several top officers of the Party. Okorocha and his companions had also threatened the Imo State Chairman and Secretary of APGA.

However, Okorocha went on to campaign as APGA candidate and won subsequently. Rochas in 2013 decamped to the All Progressive Congress.

The Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC)declared that the Imo State gubernatorial elections heldon 26 April 2011 were inconclusive since the collation of results was marred by irregularities.

The INEC ordered reruns in four local government areas and one ward, to be held on 6 May 2011.

In the event, elections were not held inOgutalocal government area due to a security threat.

The final results had Okorocha of the APGA declared winner with 336,859 votes. He was followed by the incumbent governor Ikedi Ohakimof the PDP with 290,490 votes. Former SenatorIfeanyi Araraumeof theAction Congress of Nigeria(ACN) was third with 107,068 votes.

President Goodluck Jonathan congratulated Okorocha on his election, saying the people of Imo State had spoken through the ballot box.

In preparatory for the 2015 elections, former deputy speaker, House of Representatives, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, threw in his hat for the governorship tussle.

After being able to snatch away the PDP tickets from other contenders, he had to slug it out with the incumbent, Okorocha.

The election eventually took place on April 11, 2015 after the first date was shifted by six weeks when the federal authorities cited securityconcerns. Just as Okorocha's first election debacle, thesecond one was also declared inconclusive.

INEC declared the April 11 governorship polls in Imo inconclusive, a development that led to the cancellationof elections in more than 250 polling units in 23 of the 27 local government areas.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mr. Gabriel Ada, listed the state constituencies affected in the re-run to include; Ikeduru,Isiala Mbano, Isu, Oguta, Owerri West, and Oru East.

Heexplained that the electoral commission ordered re-run for the governorship election because of the 79,000 difference between the votes scored by the leading andthe second candidates.

Okorocha won the rerun election fixed for April 25, 2015.[14]APCOn 2 March 2013 Rochas led an APGA faction to form the All Progressives Congress.

He was later elected by his colleague governors in the opposition as Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum.

The Billboard SagaAfter President Buhari's visit to the United States of America in the company of Rochas Okorocha and otherdelegates, a billboard was seen in Imo with a picture of him shaking hands with Barack Obama with the caption "Behold, the New Faces of Change" This sparked a criticisms from Nigerians on Twitter.

He later came out to disassociate himself from the placement of the banner.

Angelique Kerber upset world No 1 Serena Williams to clinch the Australian Open

Angelique Kerber posing with the cup

Angelique Kerber ruined Serena Williams' hopes of matching Steffi Graf's Grand Slam haul of 22 major titles with a shock victory in the Australian Open final.

Kerber became the first German to clinch a major since Graf won the last of her slams at Roland Garros in 1999 with a 6-43-6 6-4 success on Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne on Saturday.

World No 1 Williams had battered five-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova in the quarter-finals and fourthseed Agnieszka Radwanska in the semi-finals.

But Kerber, who saved a match point in her first-round clash with Japan's Misaki Doi, entered her first major final with immense confidence to walk away with her maiden Slam.Completing victory after two hours and eight minutes, Kerber lay outstretched in disbelief, having sealed one of the biggest shocks in tennis history.

Kerber, inspired by a message from Graf, made clear before the match that all the pressure was on her opponent and she mercilessly exploited her weaknesses in what turned out to be a thriller.

"When I played here in the first round I had one leg on the plane to Germany and now I'm here," Kerber said."I think I get the second chance and I takemy chance to be here in the finals againstSerena."

I'm really honoured to be here and to win it is my dream come true tonight."My whole life I worked really hard and now I'm here I can say I'm a Grand Slam champion. It's crazy and unbelievable.

The 28-year-old left-hander broke twice in the first set as Williams made 23 unforced errors. Those errors and a lack of timing on several potential winners enabled Kerber to break again in the seventh game and then seal the first set in 39 minutes when Williams made another unforced error.

The pair held serve in the opening two games of the second set before Williams began to get her timing back and made less errors as she raced out to a 4-1 lead.Williams sent the match into a decider when Kerber hit an easy forehand into thenet to clinch the second set.

Both players suffered early breaks in the third set but the championship appeared to have tipped in the German's favour in amarathon sixth game when she finally converted her fifth break point to take a 4-2 lead.

She extended that to 5-2 and was serving for the title at 5-3 before Williams fought back, though the inspired seventh seed was able to clinch her first major and then collapse onto the court in stunned disbelief.

It was the first time Williams has lost in eight Australian Open finals and the 21-time major champion was well below-par, making 46 unforced errors, more than double the amount of any of her previous rounds.

PoliFocus Quote Of The Day, 30th of January, 2016

"No Champion lives forever"

This is an impeccable truth! Nothing lasts forever, according to one of the greatest philosophers in history, Heraclitus, he said " Everything is in a state of flux".

This implies that nothing is constant as the only constant thing is change.

So if you are opportuned to be at the top of your game now, invest into your future because things change.

You should prepare for raining day. If this is properly done, an avoidable psychological stress or trauma will be averted.

Make a proper use of your time. The n aked truth is that power cum position is transient.

Never abuse your present position, treat your subjects well because you might need their help in the nearest future.

Renowned boxers Mike Tyson and Muhammed Ali were heavyweight boxing Champions before now but can they still stand up to that any longer? The answer is hell NO.

I can go on with the list, but permit me to stop stop here because I gat to run around.
Have a wonderful and event filled weekend.

Phil Collins And His Former Third Wife Back Together After 8 Years Of Divorce

Phil Collins and his former third wife have rekindled their romance and are living together again - eight years after the singer reportedly paid out £25m in their divorce settlement.

The Genesis star split with Orianne Cevey in 2006 saying they had "grown apart".Two years later Collins revealed he still loved his third wife, but that she was in a new relationship despite them enjoying a"shared life".

But now the pair are an item again, as Collins revealed he had bought a house in Miami where Ms Cevey, a former interpreter, and the couple's two children live.

He told Billboard magazine: "I'm actually back with my third wife - I haven't really talked about it."

We've been together for a while, and nobody's noticed."The £25m payout was the most expensive divorce settlement in the UK entertainmentworld at the time, topping the £24.3m Paul McCartney paid to Heather Mills after theirsplit.

Collins also told Billboard he was attempting to recover from a dislocated vertebra, nerve damage and foot fractures which meant he is worried he will never be fit enough to play the drums on tour again.

He said: "But my kids want me to do showsso they can brag to their friends. I intend on doing some things."I stopped going into the studio because I was sad, but now I'm getting a taste of it again."

You Misconstrued The Judgment, Stella Oduah Was Not Sacked, Says Her Press Sec

Princess Stella Oduah
Contrary to the news flying around about the Supreme Court's sack of Senator Stella Oduah on Friday, a statement has been issued by her Press Secretary, Cynthia Ferdinand debunking the news.

In her statement, she described the development as a misinterpretation of the Supreme Court rulings and that it should be disregarded.

It was reported that both Princess Stella Oduah and Andy Uba was sacked by the highest court of the land.

The statement reads:

"Adverse to the rumours that the Lawmaker Representing the good people of Anambra North Senator Stella Oduah of the Peoples Democratic Party has been sacked by the Supreme Court.

It is however pertinent to note that this is a mere misinterpretation of the Supreme Court rulings and should be disregarded in all entirety.

Find below Extracts from the Supreme Court Judgement as forwarded to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC

Tiled: THE STATUS OF PEOPLES DEMOCRATIC PARTY (PDP) SENATORS AND MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES_RE: JUDGMENT IN SC. 37/2015"

'Our clients were duly nominated by the National Executive of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2015 General Election and they contested the Election and were duly returned as elected.
They were subsequently issued with their respective Certificates of Return and have since been performing the duties for which they were elected by their respective constituents before the election andduring the nomination process, the National Executive duly forwarded our clients’ names which the Commission duly received.

Thereafter owing to some shenanigans by some staff of the Commission whom our clients believed were working for a self-styled State Executive Committee which were determined against the serene and settled position of the law to sponsor candidates for the Peoples Democratic party (PDP), our clients’ names were relegated.

This created a situation whereby the legal department of the Commission commenced playing a “musical chair” with list of candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) when they were fully aware that the only authority that is competent to forward names of candidates is the National Executive Committee by virtue of correspondence signed by its National Chairman and Secretary.

In two (2) remarkable pronouncements, the Supreme Court of Nigeria eloquently held that no list other than that forwarded by the National Executive of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) shall be countenanced by the Commission.

It is also on record that our Client appealed the decision of the Federal High Court to the Court of Appeal which set aside the decision. Upon an appeal to the Supreme Court, the Supreme Court on 29th January, 2016 allowed the appeal.

This appeal has now excited some attention and has been subjected to blatant and crude misinterpretations which have necessitated this correspondence. This correspondence is aimed at setting the record straight so that your good self will not again be misled by your legal department into unjustifiably occasioning an unnecessary confusion in the process.

The judgment under reference is SC. 37 /2015: CHIEF EJIKE OGUEBEGO & ANOR v. PEOPLES DEMOCRATIC PARTY & ORS.

May I draw your attention to the most pertinent segment of the Judgment for the purpose of the status of the legislators sponsoredby the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at pages 46, 47 and 48 of the Judgment where their lordships of the Supreme Court held as follows:-

“The Court below, however, veered from the course set by the trial court and took the matter to another level which clearly failed to take into consideration the main issue before the trial court.

On page 1291 of Volume 3 of the record of appeal the Court of Appeal held as follows:-“It is established beyond peradventure that it is the National Executive Committee of the appellant which has the power to conduct a valid primary for the nomination or selection of candidates for a general election.

Please Note the Following:

The Supreme Court did not order the withdrawal of the Certificates of Return issued by the Commission to our clients.

They did not hold that the faction of the PDP had the right to sponsor candidates for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

They did not equally authorize the Commission to substitute our clients with the individuals whose names were on the list improperly allowed by the Commission in obvious disregard of the series of judgments of the Supreme Court of Nigeria to the effect that it is only the National Executive of the party that has the vires to sponsor candidates".

2016 CHAN FALL-OUT: NFF Debunks Oliseh’s Claim, Issues Him Query

Embattled Super Eagles Coach, Sunday Oliseh
The Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) have rejected claims from Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh that he spent the sum of $4, 000 from his personal pocket to feed players of the Super Eagles during their training camp of Pretoria in South Africa.

He has however been served query to this effect and also asked to explain the shock exit of his team from the group stage at the ongoing African Nations Championship in Rwanda.

Nigeria lost 1-0 to the Syli Stars of Guinea in surprising fashion, a result which ensured they were eliminated from their group after finishing in 3rd place on 4 points behind Tunisia and Guinea.

Oliseh thereafter blamed the exit on lack of motivation adding that he had spent $4, 000 on the players welfare before they jetted off to Kigali, Rwanda from South Africa.

Reacting to Sunday Oliseh’s claims, The General Secretary of the NFF‎, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, stated that: lt is not true that Oliseh spent his hard earned $4,000 to feed the team in their Pretoria camp before CHAN. We are not aware of that.”

“We paid for their camping at the South African High Performance training centre in Pretoria and this also covered lodging and feeding for two weeks the team spent there.

We had no report from the centre of not feeding ‎them properly, so how did he spend his money to feed the team?”he added

The question is.... Who is now lying????????

Know The Symptoms, Diagnosis, & Treatment Of Zika Virus

I bring to you all what you need to know about Zika Virus
es aegypti —a mosquito vector of Zikavirus

Zika virus (ZIKV ) is a member of the Flaviviridae virus family and the Flavivirus genus.

In humans, it initially causes a mild illness known as Zika fever , Zika, or Zika disease, which since the 1950s has been known to occur within a narrow equatorial belt from Africa to Asia.

In 2014, the virus spread eastward across the Pacific Ocean to French Polynesia, then to Easter Island and in 2015 to Central America, the Caribbean, and South America, where the Zika outbreak has reached pandemic levels.

Zika virus is related to dengue, yellow fever , Japanese encephalitis, and West Nice viruses. The illness it causes is similar to a mild form of dengue fever, is treated by rest, and cannot yet be prevented by drugs or vaccines.

There is a possible link between Zika fever and microcephaly in newborn babies by mother-to-child transmission, as well as a stronger one with neurologic conditions in infected adults, including cases of the Guillain–Barré syndrome.

In January 2016, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued travel guidance on affected countries, including the use of enhanced precautions, and guidelines for pregnant women including considering postponing travel. [8][9] Other governments or health agencies soon issued similar travel warnings, while Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, and Jamaica advised women to postpone getting pregnant until more is known about the risks.

Symptoms

  • About 1 in 5 people infected with Zika virus become ill (i.e., develop Zika).
  • The most common symptoms of Zika are fever, rash, joint pain, or conjunctivitis (red eyes). Other common symptoms include muscle pain and headache.
  • The incubation period (the time from exposure to symptoms) for Zika virus disease is not known, but is likely to be a few days to a week.
  • The illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting for several days to a week.
  • Zika virus usually remains in the blood of an infected person for a few days but it can be found longer in some people.
  • Severe disease requiring hospitalization is uncommon.
  • Deaths are rare.
A child suffering from Zika Virus

Diagnosis

  • The symptoms of Zika are similar to those of dengue and chikungunya , diseases spread through the same mosquitoes that transmit Zika.
  • See your healthcare provider if you develop the symptoms described above and have visited an area where Zika is found.
  • If you have recently traveled, tell your healthcare provider when and where you traveled.
  • Your healthcare provider may order blood tests to look for Zika or other similar viruses like dengue or chikungunya.

Treatment

No vaccine or medications are available to prevent or treat Zika infections.

Treat the symptoms:

  • Get plenty of rest Drink fluids to prevent dehydration
  • Take medicine such as acetaminophen to relieve fever and pain
  • Do not take aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), like ibuprofen and naproxen.
  • Aspirin and NSAIDs should be avoided until dengue can be ruled out to reduce the risk of hemorrhage (bleeding).
  • If you are taking medicine for another medical condition, talk to your healthcare provider before taking additional medication.
  • If you have Zika, avoid mosquito bites for the first week of your illness.
  • During the first week of infection, Zika virus can be found in the blood and passed from an infected person to another mosquito through mosquito bites.
  • An infected mosquito can then spread the virus to other people.

Supreme Court Sacks Stella Oduah, Andy Uba

The Supreme Court in Nigeria has sacked two Senators from Anambra State, Stella Oduah and Andy Uba, nearly two months after a third Senator from the state, Uche Ekwunife, was sacked.

In a ruling on Friday the Court nullified the elections of both Senators representing their constituencies in the State.

Oduah was a former Aviation Minister, who resigned her position to pursue her political ambition while Mr Uba was a former Special Adviser to former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Domestic Affairs.

The Independent National Electoral Commission had declared them winners after the Senatorial election held last year.

All the Senators from Anambra State, including Mrs Ekwunife, emerged on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The apex court in its ruling also re-affirmed the chairmanship of Ejike Oguebego as the authentic State Chairman of the PDP in Anambra State.

The Supreme Court also declared the list ofcandidates submitted by the other faction illegal.Mr Oguebego had sued on behalf of themselves and others including Mr Chris Uba, who is the Anambra South Senatorial Zone candidate for the apex court to determine who were the legal and validly nominated candidates of the party to stand for the last general elections for the party inthe state. On December 7, the Court of Appeal in Enugu nullified the election of Uche Ekwunife, as the Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District.

The court consequently ordered a fresh election within 90 days. After the Appeal Court’s order, MrsEkwunife defected to the All Progressives Congress(APC), with hopes of securing the ticket, after Senator Chris Ngige of the APC who was also vied for the position had been appointed Minister.

Anambra Central Senatorial district is regarded as one of the most keenly contested in the country having a former Governor Chris Ngige, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Umeh and of course Mrs Ekwunife.

"Give up your doubt; give in your best"

Hiya Howdy,
It has been long that I write on "daily inspirational posts", it was due to a logistic reason, please accept my apology.  I'm now back and better.

The only feasible setback a man can have is the setback of 'within'. If this is conquered, all other things will fall into place.

Never doubt your ability to achieve a certain thing, give in your best. A person that tries and fails is a million times better than someone that decided not to try at all due to fear of unknown.

If you try and fail, you garner experience that will be useful in the project ahead. Going by history, no laudable project exists without passing through hitches.

Kill the 'I can't do it' spirit in you, then you will find yourself on the path of optimism. Every thing is achievable.

According to the popular axiom, 'when there is a will, there is always a way'.

Never allow people around you to design your future for you, at times it is always better not to follow multitudes when embarking on project(s).

If Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg followed the conventional way of reasoning, there will be not Facebook today. Likewise Wright Brothers that built the first aeroplane.

Be yourself, believe in yourself and you will see yourself at the top.
Good morning.

Ope oo!! Arms deal: N54.8 billion already recovered – FG

The Federal Government, yesterday, said about N54.8billion has been recovered of the money meant for arms purchase but allegedly diverted and shared among some powerful people during the previous administration by the immediate past National SecurityAdviser (NSA), Colonel Sambo Dasuki.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, made the disclosure in Abuja during a press conference. He, however, declined to give the breakdown or names of those who have made refunds, saying doing so may jeopardize further refunds and ongoing investigations and trials.

Mohammed recalled the recent National Sensitization Campaign against Corruption launched by him. He noted that his revelation about looted funds, evils of corruption in the country “made headlines within and outside Nigeria, to such an extent that the US Secretaryof State, Mr. John Kerry, included it in his speech at thisyear’s World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, a development that is widely seen as an acknowledgement of the anti-corruption fight of this administration.”

The minister, however, alerted that corruption was already fighting back. According to him,”I can tell you today that corruption is already fighting back, and it is fighting hard and dirty. Sponsored articles have startedappearing in the newspapers and in the social media, while ‘Talking Heads’ have started making the rounds in the electronic media, all deriding the fight against corruption as well as this administration.

Not stopping there, they have been creating distractions by sponsoring articles in both local and international media to deride the administration’s policies generally, tag the President a budding dictator and even write off his 2016 budget. We know that the sole purpose of these attacks is to distract attention from the war on corruption.”

He lamented that some otherwise credible voices have unwittingly allowed themselves to be railroaded into the bandwagon of pro-corruption orchestra, stressing that, “They engage sophistry to try to rally Nigerians against the anti-corruption battle.”

He said, “One hack writer even said the disclosure that 55 Nigerians allegedly stole 1.34 trillion naira between 2006 and 2013 did not trigger any anger among Nigerians. A disclosure that made the front page in over a dozen Nigerian newspapers played widely in the international media and attracted the attention of the world’s most powerful country and global financial institutions cannot be dismissed with a wave of the hand.

“Also, one of those who benefitted from the Dasukigate even had the temerity to deride the anti-corruption war as ‘selective’, when in saner climes, he should havebeen so ashamed of himself that he would have apologised to the nation and hunkered down…for good.”Mohammed predicted that, “

These sponsored attacks are not about to stop. In fact, they will become more intense and more coordinated in the days ahead,” adding however, that “the good news is that we are winning the war.

Nigerians are now talking more about corruption. Nigerians are now counting the cost of corruption to their lives.”The minister expressed regrets that whereas the national budget had been on steady increase since 1999, poverty had also increased in the land in the same proportion due to corruption.

He said, “Have you noticed that whereas Nigeria’s national budget has increased from just over 900 billionNaira in 1999 to over 6 trillion Naira in 2016, poverty has also increased almost by the same proportion? Thereason is not far fetched: Appropriated funds have mostly ended up in the pockets of a few looters.“When the money meant to construct roads are looted, the end result is that the roads are not built and the people suffer and even die in avoidable road accidents.

When the money meant to provide electricity is looted, we all are perpetually sentenced to darkness. When themoney meant for healthcare is pocketed by a few, we are unable to reduce maternal and infant mortality.

These are the costs of corruption. Let us not just talk about corruption in the abstract, let us be counting its cost to our lives, in order to drive home the point that corruption must be tackled decisively for Nigerians to feel the impact of governance.

”Urging Nigerians to continue to support the anti-corruption war of the Buhari administration, the minister said, “the treasury looters, who have so much resources in their kitty, and their cohorts will throw everything but the kitchen sink at this administration, but we have no doubt that Nigerians are discerning enough to know the truth which, in the words of President Muhammadu Buhari, is that unless Nigeria kills corruption, corruption will kill Nigeria.”

Ekiti: PDP Chieftains Set To Defect To APC In Mass

Indications have emerged in Ado-Ekiti that some prominent members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have concluded arrangements to dump their party for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

It was gathered that a former Acting Governor of Ekiti State, Mr Tope Ademiluyi and ex-envoy to the Republic of Congo under former President Goodluck Jonathan, Princess Jolaade Onipede, were part of the move.

Other People’s Democratic Party’s bigwigs, who may dump the Party include, a member of fourth House of Representatives, Hon Adeyemi Orilele, immediate past Executive Secretary, National Health nsurance Scheme, Dr Femi Thomas and former special assistant in the state, Pastor Yemi Olayinka.

The list also include a former governorship aspirant and later governorship candidate of the All Nigeria’s Peoples Party in 2007, Mr Yinka Akerele, Hon. Bisi Aloba, a former Commissioner for Finance, Mr Tunji Adeniyi, among others.

One of the intending defectors, who spoke under anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on behalf of the group, said every arrangement has been perfected to ensure their smooth integration into APC, for the party to be well fortified to confront the PDP in Ekiti in 2018.

“Don’t forget that most of these heavyweight politiciansserved under Segun Oni’s government , who is now the APC National Deputy Chairman (South) .“Efforts of former governor Oni has begun to yield results.

APC is seriously preparing for 2018 and no stone will be left unturned to ensure that we reclaim this state from Governor Ayodele Fayose.

“We have been permanently abandoned in a party we struggled to build. It was not our interest to abandon the party , even when we knew we were being unduly treated because of our love for the PDP.“

But as things stand now, we have to take our destiniesin our own hands. We cannot continue to be oppressed in a party we invested so heavily to build.

“The likes of our former Chairman, Ropo Adesanya, who produced governor Fayose in 2003 and former governor Oni , had left the party. Senator Gbenga Alukohad left while many are aggrieved and we soon leave.

“Those who defected from the Labour Party are now controlling our party and we have no choice than to leave the house for them. But we will know how far they will go with this development”.

The Publicity Secretary , Hon. Taiwo Olatunbosun, who confirmed the development, said the defectors won’t betreated as new comers, saying a committee has been set up to ensure that defectors are well integrated into the party.

“I am well aware of the plan by 0ver 40 PDP bigwigs to defect into our party. We are preparing to receive them, because there is no new comer in our constitution. No progressive political party will shut its doors against intending members, it is against the tenets of democracy.“

After this defection, I want to tell you that what becomes of the PDP is a carcass. The party will die a natural death in the state. Our mobilisation drive is yielding results. There is no reason for us to be apprehensive because the people that are coming are refined politicians”, he said.

Shocking!! Police Detain Kaduna Varsity Lecturer Over Facebook Comment

Kaduna State Police Commissioner, Mallam Umar Shehu, today ordered the detention of Dr. John Danfulani, a critic of the government of Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, over an alleged Facebook comment, which the Police said was capable of inciting crisis.

The Vice Chancellor of Kaduna State University, Professor William Qurix, had suspended Dr. Danfulani on the 8th of January, over the said commend, which isyet to be made public.

Danfulani had addressed a press conference in Kadunain August last year under the banner of Centrum Initiative for Development and Fundamental Rights, CENTRUM, in which he described el-Rufai as being “high handed and unfair” to citizens of the state.

He has also kicked against what he said was the “unjust massacre” of Nigeria Shiite after a bloody encounter between the Nigeria Army and the Shiite left scores dead last December in Zaria, Kaduna State.

The Police had written Qurix to produce Danfulani on the 21st of January in a letter with reference – CR: 3000/KDS/X/D6/Vol.82/150 signed ACP Umar Kofar-Niasa.

According to findings, Danfulani was inIndia at the time the police was lookingfor him, but he promptly returned on Wednesday, three days when he read about the invitation.Speaking to newsmen at the Police Headquarters before he was taken away, he said he was innocent of the charge.

“We all know what is happening. I am innocent of theseallegation, not say that I have never made critical statements before now”, he told our reporter, who had been monitoring the development.

“I am being taken to my house now”, he said on phone, after our reporter had left to file this story. “They say they are going to take my laptop and search for whatever they want.

But I am fine”, he said, “there is nothing to worry about”, he maintained. It was confirmed by his lawyer, Barr. James Kanyip, that Dr Danfulani was denied bail and would be detained and charged to Court tomorrow, Friday.

House of Reps suspend plenary till February 16

The House of Representatives has commenced on a two-week break from plenary to resume on Tuesday 16February.

Speaker Yakubu Dogara announced the suspension at the House. This is as the Chairman of the committee on Media andPublicity, Abdulrazak Namdas told House of Representatives correspondents that the break from plenary would give members ample time to work with Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) on the 2016 budget at the committee level.

Meanwhile, the House has called on the federal government to halt the mass retrenchment of teachers and workers of University Staff Secondary Schools andPrimary Schools.

To this end, the House mandated its committee on Tertiary Education to meet with the Minister of Education to explain the new policy.

The resolution followed the passage of a motion sponsored by Babatunde Gabriel Kolawole under matters of Urgent Public Importance.

Leading the debate on the motion, Kolawole argued that any policy that would render teachers and general workers of University Staff Secondary Schools and Primary Schools, who are employees of the government, jobless puts the country at a disadvantage.

He said: “These teachers and general workers have long been engaged and have put in many years in the service of their fatherland ranging between 10 and 30 years or more, in the case of some of them.

"The economic reality of the moment and the general economic hardship people are going through today in Nigeria as a result of lack of gainful employment and under-employment, will be worsened by the decision of the government to close all these schools.”

The House in its resolution also urged the Federal Government to make efforts to absorb teachers and workers already affected into the general university staff pool.

Melaye Lampoon Obasanjo On His Letter To The Senate

Senator Dino Melaye
The Chairman, Senate Committee on Federal Capital Territory, Dino Melaye,on Thursday reacted to the letter written by ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo to the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, describing it as “a misplacement of anger.”

Arguing that Mr. Obasanjo’s regime exposed the National Assembly to corruption and easy money, Mr. Melaye (APC Kogi West), in a statement in Abuja, said he expected the former resident to have forgiven all those who “defrauded him in 2007, those who collected his money and refused to implement the 3rd term agenda.”

He said, “I have tremendous respect  for President Olusegun Aremu Okikiola Obasanjo. Elder statesman, respected pan Africanist and committedpatriot. I went through the letter written to all senators and members of the House of Representatives.

The letter I can see is a misplacement of anger.“Our leader is mistaking the 8th National Assembly as the same Senate Assembly that defrauded him in 2007: Those who collected his money and refused to implement the 3rd term agenda.

I appeal to Baba that we are not the ones please. After nine years of that bribery saga, the first of its kind, I expect forgiveness to have taken place.“There was the case of bribery introduced by the Obasanjo’s regime in the desperate attempt to remove Speaker Ghali Umar Na’abba from office then.

In fact, there was open display of that bribery money on the floor of the house.“That government exposed the National Assembly to corruption and easy money. I hope this is not an attempt to cover up and distract attention from  the Halliburton and Siemens corruption allegations.

“While I am against corruption anywhere in Nigeria, I will not support accusations based on anger and vindictiveness. The 8th Senate should also look inwardly and purge herself of all the deliberate misgivings of the past.

Nigeria must work and we must support the anti corruption stand of the Muhammadu Buhari’s Administration.”Mr. Obasanjo had written the National Assembly accusing federal lawmakers of corruption, impunity, greed and of repeatedly breaking the nation’s laws.

In a letter dated January 13 and addressed to the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, the former president specifically accused the lawmakers of fixing and earning salaries and allowances far above what the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission approved for them.

He also alleged that most of the 109 senators and 369 members of the House of Representatives werereceiving constituency allowances without maintaining constituency offices as the laws required of them.Mr. Obasanjo was president between 1999 and 2007.

In the letter, exclusively obtained by PREMIUM TIMES, the former president said on a few occasion, both in and out of office as president, he had agonised over the massive corruption and lawlessness at the National Assembly and other arms and tiers of government.

He said he had reflected and expressed, outspokenly at times, his views on the practice in the National Assembly “which detracts from “distinguishness” and “honourability” because it is shrouded in opaqueness and absolute lack of transparency and could not be regarded as normal, good and decent practice in a democracy that is supposed to be exemplary.”

While referring to the issue of budgets and financesof the federal legislature, Mr. Obasanjo said the present economic situation that the country has found itself in is the climax of the steady erosion of good financial and economic management which grew from bad to worse in the last six years or so.
