[Sport] What Mourinho told me after Chelsea’s exit — Lukaku

Belgium star, Romelu Lukaku, has said that former Blues boss Jose Mourinho did not force him out at Chelsea and revealed the Portuguese was the first person to send him a message of support following his move to Everton.

“Choices have been made by me. By me. Not by them,” Lukaku told the Daily Express.
Mourinho has been criticised for allowing the Belgian to leave Stamford Bridge, initially on loan for the 2013-14 campaign before the move was made permanent by Everton the following summer.

Lukaku, who has scored in each of his last seven Premier League games, admits he is saddened by Mourinho’s exit and believes the criticism surrounding the former Chelsea manager is unfair.

“Everyone says it is Mourinho’s fault, but it is not his fault because I made the decision. I went to his office to ask if I could go.

“He was the first one to say, ‘Good luck.’ When I signed the deal [at Everton] at 11 o’clock, I got a text message on my old BlackBerry saying ‘Good luck, do your best and I will see you next season.’

He was the first, nobody knows that and that is why for me he gets immense respect.

[Entertainment] I didn’t return to music because I failed in politics – 9ice

Nigerian music star, 9ice, has debunked claims that he returned to music because he failed in politics.

The ‘Alakpomeji’ crooner, who was said to have shocked his fans when he signified interest to run for a House of Reps seat in Oyo state but lost during the APC primary, told Punch that although he did not win the election, the experience has taught him a lot.

9ice said, “When I got into politics I realised that whatever level you attain in life, there are people who are more successful.

If you think you are the richest man alive, politics would teach you that there are richer men on earth.

There are a lot of things that need to be done and a lot of wrongs that need to be right. We need someone like a prophet to lead this country.

We need someone with the fear of God. It goes beyond having a degree; we need leaders with the fear of God.

We need someone like Pastor Adeboye to rule this country, besides he is educated and that is a plus.

We need someone with good conscience and the fear of God. We don’t have that in Nigeria.”

The lanky singer, who is back in the studio, stressed he did not return to music because he failed in politics.

“It is not true that I am returning to music after failing in my political endeavours. People would always talk.

When I went into politics, people said that it was because I was no longer making money through music.

Music is my passion and even if it does not put food on my table, I would continue to pursue my passion.

Music is something I can do for free. If it pays my bills fine, but if it doesn’t, I would still continue to do music.

They have not heard the last of my political sojourn; come 2019, I would contest again,” 9ice added.

Nnewi Explosion: FG to provide medical items for victims

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Saturday said the Federal Government would provide medical items to aid the speedy recovery of victims of the Nnewi gas explosion.

The South-East Coordinator of NEMA, Mr James Eze, said this after visiting victims of the explosion at the National Orthopedic Hospital, Enugu, and University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu State.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the explosion, which occurred on Thursday, led to the death of six persons while several others sustained burns.

Eze said that the government would further equip the Regional Burn Centre at the National Orthopedic Hospital in Enugu.

“NEMA commends the staff of both federal hospitals for their commitment to duty even in this festive season.

“The three victims in the Regional Burn Centre at the National Orthopedic Hospital, Enugu, and the pregnant victim at the Intensive Care Unit of UNTH are in stable condition and responding to treatment.

“ The agency would assist these health institutions with medical items to improve their services as well as help in the speedy recovery of these victims, especially those at the burn centre,’’ he said.

Anambra Commissioner for Health, Dr Joe Akabuike, who also visited the victims, said Gov. Willie Obiano sent him to reassure the hospitals that the state government would pay the medical bills of the patients.

“Gov. Obiano is deeply concerned and had also sent me to give him up-to-date information on the condition of the victims sent to the two federal referral hospitals in Enugu.

“ Thank God all the victims are doing well and worthy of note is the pregnant victim, who is now conscious and responding very well to treatment,’’ Akabuike said.

Dr. C. U. Nwadinigwe, the Chief Medical Director of the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu, assured the agency and the Anambra government that the victims would be given the best medical care.

[Sport] Louis van Gaal hints he may resign as Man Utd lose to Stoke

ManU Head Coach, Louis Van Gaal
Louis van Gaal suggested he could resign after Manchester United lost 2-0 at Stoke City, marking a fourth consecutive defeat in all competitions.

United, who started captain Wayne Rooney on the bench at the Britannia Stadium, fell behind to a Bojan Krkic goal after a poor defensive header from Memphis Depay, and Marko Arnautovic added a second soon afterwards with a fierce strike following a free kick.

United had a chance to reduce the deficit when Rooney, who replaced Depay at the break, set up Marouane Fellaini, but his shot was tame and Stoke finished the game in relative comfort.

Van Gaal, who hit out at the media in midweek over reports he would be sacked, told reporters after the match that he could consider walking away.

“We have lost a fourth game, so we have to wait and see,” he said. “The club doesn’t have to fire or sack me— sometimes I do it by myself.”

Asked whether he was the man to motivate the United players, he said: “That is now the big issue.

“I have tried to do everything but the pressure shall be higher and higher with every match. That is the problem now.

“It is more difficult because I am also part of the fourth matches we have lost so people are looking at me and I have to deal with that, but more importantly the players have to deal with

Wow!!! Port Harcourt Refinery To Start Production In One Week – Kachikwu

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ibe Kachikwu, has said that the Port Harcourt refinery will start production in the next one week.

The Minister made the statement during his Christmas visit to the plant in Alesa Eleme in Rivers State on Friday.

He was there to oversee the repair work done so far and hinted that the refinery would be back to production in the next one week.

The Port Harcourt refinery has a combined production capacity of over five million litres of PMS per day and the Minister said that getting the nation’s refineries to work at full capacity is the way to go.

According to Mr Kachikwu, the up-scaling of the nation’s refineries ensures transparency and subsequent reduction in the importation of petroleum products that would make scarcity
remain in the past.

It was announced earlier in November that the
Kaduna Refinery and Petrochemical Company had also resumed production of petrol four months after it was closed for repairs.

The Managing Director of the company, Saidu
Mohammed, who disclosed this to Channels
Television in Kaduna, said that the plant, which was closed in September, came back on stream
ahead of the December deadline for Nigeria’s four refineries to return to full production.

Who says President Muhammadu Buhari is misfiring??

[Sport] Buhari To Honour 1985, 2015 Golden Eaglets, Team Nigeria In 2016

President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to honour all athletes who excelled in various sports disciplines from 1985 when the players won the FIFA U-17 World Cup till date.

Among those yet to be rewarded are the Golden Eaglets of 1985 who were promised houses for winning the maiden edition of the FIFA U-17 World Cup in China.

Others are the victorious national men’s basketball team who won the 2015 FIBA Africa Basketball Championship in Tunisia, Team Nigeria at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa, and World Scrabble Champion,
Wellington Jighere.

Relocate To Sambisa If Indeed You Have Defeated Boko Haram, Fayose Tells Lai Mohammed

Ayo Fayose
Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has challenged the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, to relocate to Sambisa in Borno State or Yobe and move around there without heavy military security if indeed he was sure that Boko Haram had been defeated.

The governor also called on Nigerians to pray especially for President Mohammadu Buhari; saying, “The President needs God to give him the necessary wisdom to be able to find solution to the country’s economic and security problems.”

Speaking through his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose said; “only God’s intervention can save Nigeria from the present economic and security problems as it is glaring that the man running the affairs of the country at the federal level does not have any answer to the problems.”

He said, “Even the Holy Bible said in James 1:5 that if anyone lacks wisdom, he should ask God and as it is, Nigerians must assist the President in asking for wisdom and understanding to tackle the country’s economic and security problems before Nigeria is further plunged into more woes with the Federal government’s decision to borrow N2.2 Trillion, which translates to N6.066 billion per day to finance the 2016 Budget.”

He described the Federal Government’s announced reduction of petrol pump price from N87 to N85 per litre as a continuation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) government’s governance by deceit, saying, “Even secondary school students of economics know that you cannot deregulate and regulate at the same time.”

The governor said; “it is only in a confused and clueless economy that government will plan to spend more when revenue has reduced by more than 50 percent.”

Governor Fayose, who maintained that petrol will not sell below N100 per litre in 2016, added that; “Even now that the price is N87 and subsidy is yet to be removed, Nigerians are buying at between N130 and N300 per litre.

What will now happen when they remove subsidy and allow market forces to determine the price?”

The governor described claimed by the Information Minister that Boko Haram insurgents had been defeated as strange.

He said, “Nigerians will only take the minister serious if he relocates to either Sambisa in Borno State or Yobe State and stay there till the end of March, next year without heavy military security.”

He said; “To show their level of confusion, two days after the Minister of Information declared that Boko Haram had been defeated, President Buhari said the government would persuade Boko Haram to abandon their fight.

One then wonders how the same Boko Haram insurgents Lai Mohammed said were already defeated will have to be persuaded to abandon their fight.

“Interestingly, the same Boko Haram that Lai Mohammed said had been defeated reported attacked Kimba village in Gur ward of Biu Local Government Area of Borno State yesterday night.

“Therefore, the Information Minister must show Nigerians how peaceful Borno and Yobe States have become after the defeat of Boko Haram by relocating to either Sambisa, Maiduguri or Yobe.”

Too Bad!! Robbers shoot father, son in Calabar

An unidentified businessman based in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, and his son, have been shot after an armed robbery operation in the victim’s residence that reportedly lasted for more than three hours.

A close family source, Adah Igwe, disclosed to The Sun that the man owned a filing station around the vicinity, adding that the victims, who reside along the MCC Road in Calabar, are recuperating from gun shot wounds they sustained during the attack.

According to Adah, “The incident happened in the early hours of Thursday, between 1 am and 4 am. The robbers gained access to the building after they had succeeded in disarming the security guard.

They first tied up the security guard and seized his phone before they proceeded to the house which shares a perimeter fence with the fuel station.

“When they came, they shot through the door and later through the window which they broke and came in through it,” the source revealed, noting that a stray bullet pierced through the window hitting the son in the leg while the father was shot after the robbers gained entrance through the window.

She also alleged that after the about three hours operation, the robbers left with “small cash” as they could not find “whatever it was that they were looking for.”

Reports say the victims were later admitted at an undisclosed private clinic where they underwent surgery to extract pellets from their legs.

It was observed during a visit to the building that the house was being renovated as welders were seen fixing the broken metal works. Also noticeable were shattered glasses where the bullets passed through and a part where one round lodged in the wall.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. John Eluu, said he is yet to be briefed on the incident. “I am yet aware of that attack, but I will find out and get back to you,” Eluu said.

However, the State Housing Police Division, reports say, had visited the scene and collected statements.

Fire Again!! Traders count loses as fire razes 200 shops in Ibadan

Tragedy struck in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Friday, as more than 200 shops were reportedly burnt down at a major plank market at Alaro area of Sango.

Although the exact cause of the fire, which started around 3 pm is yet to be established, sketchy reports hold it that the fire was as a result of the stockpile of planks and heaps of sawdust in the market.

As at 7.30 pm, men of the state fire service were seen trying to put out the fire, which was still raging, The Punch reports.

Some of the traders estimate the loss to the fire incident to be over N250m and expressed fear that if they failed to put out the fire, it could extend to other shops overnight.

One of the traders, who simply identified himself as Adegoke, expressed anger at the fire service and described their efforts as “lame and inadequate”.

He said, “Since today (Friday) is Christmas, I decided to observe it at home like many of our members.

But a customer called me on my mobile telephone while I was at home. I left my shop around 2.30pm after attending to the customer who urgently needed some goods.

“He said he urgently needed to buy some planks, so I went to the shop. After the transaction, I closed the shop and went back home. I was surprised when I received a call 30 minutes later that the market was on fire.”

“I am a medium-sized trader, but there are traders here with planks and equipment worth more than N5m in their shops,” he said. Apart from the planks, several sawing machines and other logging equipment were lost in the fire.

I lost goods worth N3.5m,” Adegoke added. Reacting to the incident, another trader, Afolabi, said instead of bringing more fire service trucks to the scene, only one was sent, which had to leave the scene three times to get more water.

He said, “Each time the vehicle left to refill water, we lost more shops because the fire would gain more ground.

Don’t forget that this is the time of the year when there are more fire incidents. More fire service vehicles are needed to forestall possible overnight fire here.

As you can see, we now pay to bring water tanker to help the fire service men.”

BuhariGate As A limit Of Obstructionist Politics By Garba Shehu

As the war on corruption heightens, the political battle-line between the governing All Progressives Congress, APC and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has sharply been drawn.

While leaders from both parties voice out their support for the clean-up of the country by ridding it of corruption, the National Working Committee of the PDP seems clearly to be working contrary to the anti-corruption rhetoric of their Board of Trustees.

Their public communication organs have, in particular, become increasingly combative against the exercise.

All that the President, leading the APC change orchestra is trying to do is to revamp a moribund nation with growth, jobs and recovered looted funds.

Sadly, only a few, if any in Wadata House are treating the war against corruption as the extra-ordinary event which it is. Instead, when they speak up, they do so most ardently against it.

In a clear demonstration of abstructist politics, they challenge the government in every move it makes, but fail to spell out alternative roadmaps to curbing the monstrous corruption that threatens to consume the country; they rush to condemn and dramatize even the smallest of measures which, given time and patience will manifest through positive outcomes.

Doing this gives the PDP the illusion of being an effective opposition party but taken in the context of national interest and the mood of the nation, it is doubtful it it is yielding anything beyond limited political returns.

To most Nigerians, the cacophonous opposition is just a media spectacle to distract or mellow the President.

After an historic loss in an election to the opposition for the first time in the annals of this country’s political history, PDP has not looked inwards in any serious way to seek it's revival.

The first and major leap at reform ended disastrously when first, the party establishment rejected a well-timed apology tendered on its behalf for their past failures.

Then, the leader of the reform movement got himself mired in allegations leading to court charges of the theft of billions of Naira voted for weapons purchase to fight terror in the North East. Chief Raymond Dokpesi's trial (and Col. Dasuki's) is no doubt a serious blow to any prospects of a turn-around in the PDP.

The party did not seek democratize their internal organization, a major reason for their implosion leading to the loss of the election or began thinking innovatively about the challenges of modern day Nigeria, nor have they got a "Plan B" that is inviting to the voters.

It is this failure to reckon with, or look at the real issues confronting the party and the nation that led to their call for an investigation of President Buhari for having been supplied two jeeps by the erstwhile Jonathan administration after the personal bullet-proof jeep he owned was bombed by yet unknown assailants.

As the Special Adviser to the President, Femi Adesina said, issuance of the cars, soon after this incident was merely a face-saving move, intended to cover the government's failure to keep its duty to this particular former leader.

The law, cited as the Remuneration of Former Presidents and Heads of State (and other Ancillary Matters), entitles former Nigerian Presidents including General Muhammadu Buhari to “three vehicles to be bought by the Federal Government and liable to be replaced every four years”.

Cars are just a few in a litany of entitlements written in that law although it is contestable to say that General Buhari had been given his due entitlements by successive administrations as provided thereunder.

Regime after regime treated him as if he was not a former Head of State. General Abacha came on the saddle and wanted to throw everything at Buhari who, knowing his very nature declined virtually but his military pension.

The military in particular treated him so badly that its leaders kept silent when the PDP charged that he didn't have WAEC papers.

One shameless Army Records officer said that the former Head of State had no records at all under their system.

General Buhari went without a full compliment of armed guards from the army he served at the highest level until the dastardly bomb attack on his convoy in April 2014.

It was at this time that the Chief of Army Staff at that time thought it necessary to reinstate the armed convoy to protect him.

When they brought the two cars within a few days of his being bombed, the staff of the General were merely informed that this was from the Federal Government in fulfillment of its obligation to him.

Since this was an entitlement long-overdue, not minding that it came short of what was expected, there was absolutely nothing wrong on the part of the General for accepting that which was due to him.

This hashtag “#Buharigate” was intended as a counterpoise to "Dasukigate," the phenomenal corruption scheme by which money intended for weapons to fight terror was shared among PDP leaders.

It was a fake intervention and a malicious propaganda against the president, obviously intended to detract from his enormously huge reputational capital, the basis on which the APC nation-wide victory was founded.

The #Buharigate failed to gain traction because was seen as an opposition overreach and a desperate attempt to tarnish his hard-earned name and nothing more.

No serious blogger therefore paid a serious attention to it. This baseless allegation that the President had benefitted from the diversion of money intended to fight insurgency under the former National Security Adviser equally underlines the cruel nature of today’s politics, that even the best personal examples cannot keep a leader from the tar brush of the opponent.

Apart from seeking to mellow the President, I suspect that the opposition had thought these attacks would revive the collapsed fortunes of the PDP while at the same time projecting their leaders as victims of persecution in the hands of the APC administration.

What however is encouraging in the country today is that Nigerians have thrown their full weight behind the war on corruption.

This itself is an account the constructive nature of the government’s engagement against the vice and the determination with which it is being fought.

Adding impetus and flavor is the frustration at the routionisation of corruption by the last administration and their inadequate and impotent efforts to curb and punish high-profile offenders.

My concluding augment is that President Buhari’s election and war against terrorism and corruption have become a template.

In Niger, Chad and Ghana where there will be elections next year, opposition candidates are parading themselves as the “Buhari” of their own country.

President Buhari must have himself been embarrassed by calls, through newspaper articles, posters and banners in the course of his visits to these friendly countries, saying “we want Buhari type elections; we will wage Buhari-type anti-corruption war”.

One Chadian political party published an advertorial asking their government to procure and issue permanent voters cards as well as the use of card readers in the coming election and if the funds were not available, “let us borrow from Nigeria” for the coming elections. President Buhari was and is far, far away from, and remains untouched by the “Dasukigate”.

“#Buharigate” is therefore a fraud and an unbecoming spectacle designed to tarnish the illustrious record of the President so as to mellow his anti-corruption drive.

It failed because it was born out of desperation to gain sympathy by an opposition that can’t heal itself unless it comes to terms with the danger of corruption they thrived in, and the party's internal structures are overhauled and remade to meet the minimum requirements of a democratic organization.

Bombshell: Stone Us If Buhari Fails To Deliver On Electoral Promises – Prince Momoh

Prince Tony Momoh, is the former Minister of Information during President Ibrahim Babangida’s administration.

In this media interview, the APC stalwart speaks on President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, recovered looted funds and sundry issues.

PATRICK OCHOGA was there for LEADERSHIP Weekend.

How would you assess President Buhari’s administration, particularly on the economy?

You have heard the President said he is the one that Nigerians voted for and he is responsible to them not to me or you.

He is not owned by anybody. He was there between 1983 and 1985, he has experienced it, he is the only one who came since independence to be President of Nigeria and succeeded.

No other one,

Tafawa Balewa wanted to be a broadcaster, he became Prime Minister,

Alhaji Shehu Shagari wanted to become a Senator, he became President;

Olusegun Obasanjo was in prison praying to be released, at the end of the day he became president,

Late Yar ‘Adua wanted to retire to lecture in Ahmadu Bello University, he became President;

Jonathan was taken from Bayelsa to Abuja and made Vice President and them later became Acting President and President.

Buhari went into politics and wanted to be President in 2003, he failed, 2007 he failed and 2015 he succeeded.

Do you think that this type of person will be rushed into doing things he don’t believe will make Nigerians grow

I can assure you No. There are three steps in Buhari’s scheme, S+S=P that is the equation. S is for security, he will secure Nigeria, the other S is for stability, he will stabilise Nigeria through infrastructural development and the outcome of security and stability is Prosperity and Nigeria will prosper.

At the end of the day, if Buhari doesn’t perform, stone us because he is going to perform. When people begin to appoint ministers for him, programme economic measures for him, begin to tell him what will happen in education and other ministries, you give the impression that he came to be President without preparing.

I can assure you he is prepared to hold office by coming out with a book called project Nigeria and that book he has always had since 2002 when he entered politics and he is going to implement this program.

He has a contract with every Nigerian, all the ethnic groups and I have said it, the South-East will be more in his party than any other group.

Why? Because he is going to develop their area more than PDP ever did. Buhari knows where he wants Nigeria to be. We are talking of four years and it has not gotten to one year yet and people are saying he is very slow.

One thing people don’t know is that those who are corrupt, those who did money laundering, those who diverted all sort of things, they know where the heat is.

This BVN I don’t know how it works but it is revealing a lot of things, if you have one bank account, the thing will reveal all the commitments you have.

I don’t know how it works but the government seems to be finding out where people have hidden money more than any other time in our
history.

I am not in that group, I am not carry out any investigation but a lot of things are coming out and a lot of things have been done.

He believes that anybody who took Nigeria’s money must return it, and should be punished for taking the money and denying the people of facilities they would have had if the way the money was used for them.

Look at what is happening with arms, people went and collected billions of dollars and sat down to share the money and people where dying in the North-East, those who had no arms with them ran into Cameroon, they put them under court marshal and sentenced them to death and they didn’t give them arms.

When they are dealing with such people, Nigerians are saying it is because they are in government.

Those in government are the ones stealing the money, those in APC had no access so will you say because there was no APC among the PDP that had the opportunity to serve Nigeria that pocketed the money should not be dealt with.

Buhari has said he is not against anybody but everybody must bear the consequences of their actions and when things are happening as media men find out why it is affecting your friend or colleague.

We read in the paper that the Federal government have received some stolen funds from looters. Don’t you think giving credibility to the anti-graft war Nigerians deserve to know those behind the funds?

Government doesn’t talk, it is the media that talks, and you are given the responsibility to monitor governance on behalf of the people.

Sovereignty belongs to the people of Nigeria and through the constitution, the government generates its power and authority.

The motto of government is keep our secret, secret and the motto of the journalist is publishe and be dammed but to publish the truth.

If government has been talking about people who have returned looted money, find out because you have protection.

It is not the duty of the government to start publishing anything, what if what they publish other is wrong?

They can be sued. The point I am making is that yes, the people have the right to know and the people have the right to be told who does the telling.

The current government in Edo will be rounding off next year and there will be primaries in both parties soon, what advise do you have for your party in the state to ensure rancour free primaries?

There will be rancour free primaries in Edo State, APC doesn’t impose candidates and nobody is going to impose any candidate.

Anybody who wants to be governor in Edo State should go to the delegates who will vote. Voting will be free and fair and nobody will be forced to vote.

I have heard that the governor wants to impose candidate, but he is not going to impose any candidate and nobody has the right to impose any candidate.

He will ensure a level play field and the party will also ensure it. It is not the governor who will conduct the primaries, some people so preoccupied to rundown Oshiomhole.

He will not impose a candidate and if he does, we have the right to vote our choice candidate because voting will be free, fair and secret so why will anybody think the governor will look at his shoulder while voting.

He is only exercising his right as a person not as a governor to force you to do what you don’t want to do.

You said Nigeria has a special anointing to be united, reconcile this statement with the agitation in the South-East that they want to go.

What of North-East, you know, where God has a programme, Satan is always at work, darkness is always at work but the work of darkness is always temporary and God’s anointing is permanent, you can delay it but you can’t subvert it.

When America said Nigeria will collapse, I said Nigeria will not collapse but they are correct in their prediction but in God’s anointing Nigeria is the only county packaged in the first half of the last century that has not collapsed.

All other federation worldwide has collapsed,
USSR, Slovakia but Nigeria has not collapsed because Nigeria is packaged to help grow the earth and the young ones will be the ones to do it.

Nigerians are knocking on the door of paradise only them are in the forefront of going so.

What is your take on the agitation for the
sovereign state of Biafra?

They have the right to protest as any other group has the right to protest because that is their own reaction to what they considered as injustice.

But the fact is that protest has a limitation, there is what they call free speech plus, if in exercising your freedom to speech you punch my nose,
that’s where your freedom ends and if people say they are expressing themselves and start destroying people’s cars, there is a body set up to ensure people are free.

So in doing that, ensure you do it in accordance
with the law. I myself will rise to my feet to sympathise with them, that is freedom of expression they are exercising but when it reaches plus destruction, then it will not be allowed.

What is the hope of the APC Edo in the winning the 2016 election?

We will work hard and win the election and if we don’t, it means we didn’t work hard but no rigging.

Nobody is going to rig election any more, look at Kogi and Bayelsa, the President has said there must be fairness and INEC should do the right thing.

Ope Ooo!!! Boko Haram can no longer coordinate attacks – Buratai boasts

Nigeria’s chief of army staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai has assured residents of the north-east that 2016 will be a more peaceful year for them because Boko Haram “can no longer coordinate any attacks”.

He gave the assurance on Thursday after his operational visits to troops locations in parts of Borno and Yobe states.

He said within the time frame given by President Muhammadu Buhari, joint forces had decimated Boko Haram and substantially destroyed its enclaves on Nigerian territory.

“Going by the present pace and momentum of the military operation, no insurgent or group will be able operate freely by 2016,” he said.

“Since Mr President’s mandate, we have done a lot to defeat these criminals; we have degraded them in such a manner that they can no longer hold any ground in our country.

“They can no longer coordinate any attacks; we will, in the coming few days, completely close in on them, so the outlook for 2016 is bright. I want to assure Nigerians, especially the Northeast, that 2016 will be more peaceful.”

Buratai said that the military would consolidate on the successes recorded in the operations so far, stressing that there would be no room for the insurgents to operate henceforth.

At the army brigade in Biu and the armed forces special forces battalion stationed in Buratai town, the army chief conveyed the president’s congratulatory message to the troops for meeting the deadline.

He said that the president was pleased with the successes recorded, especially in meeting the timeline in fighting insurgency. But he urged them not to be complacent, saying the insurgents would employ desperate measures to survive the onslaught by the military.

At the base of 21 Brigade deployed from Damaturu to Buni Yadi, Buratai commended the soldiers for their efforts in curbing the activities of the insurgents in the area.

He urged the troops to remain alert and make good use of available equipment for the operations.

The chief of army staff reiterated the commitment of the army and other relevant authorities to providing the necessary logistics to enable troops sustain the momentum.

Buratai, who held durbars in all the locations visited, also addressed issues raised by soldiers and officers.

Some of the soldiers who spoke at the durbar expressed their desire to end the counter-insurgency operations and return home as soon as possible.

Goodnews: Katsina to recruit 3,000 teachers next year

Gov. Aminu Bello Masari
Katsina State will commence moves to bridge its teacher deficit with recruitment of 2,802 in the 2016 fiscal year, Governor Aminu Bello Masari has said.

Masari stated this when he presented the 2016 appropriation bill which has education with lion share of N22.7 billion, to the state assembly.

The governor gave the breakdown of the figure to comprise of 1,401 expected to be recruited to teach in the secondary schools, 1,314 in the SUBEB and 87 to be employed in the Science and technical education board.

He said the recruitment of teachers was part of an over all plan to reposition the education sector which he insisted was priority of his administration.

The governor noted that most schools especially those located in the rural areas across the state are not conducive for teaching and learning adding “Government decided to phase the rehabilitation and reconstruction of schools”.

Katsina state currently has about 19,833 primary school teachers out of which 4,996 are female.

No More Supply Bottlenecks As NNPC begins direct delivery to marketers’ retail outlets

As part of efforts to bridge the huge supply gap occasioned by the current fuel scarcity, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has commenced direct delivery of petrol to Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) retail outlets across the country.

The latest intervention by the state oil company  NNPC was disclosed by the National Operation Controller of IPMAN, Mr. Mike Osatuyi, during an inspection tour of some IPMAN retail outlets yesterday.

Osatuyi, while lauding the initiative of the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Mr. Ibe Kachikwu, for bringing relief to Nigerians during the yuletide, urged him to sustain the tempo, so that products can be made available to consumers across the country.

Under the latest move, NNPC will provide petrol to registered and certified members of IPMAN, deliver the products at their respective retail station, and ensure that, IPMAN monitors that the products are sold at the approved price of N87 per liter.

The current arrangement according to him, has saved IPMAN members the hassles of going to depot to queue for products because NNPC has already taken off the burden of sourcing for products and transporting to the retail stations.

And to further ease the scarcity tension, Osatuyi said the management of NNPC under the current direct delivery arrangement has approved a credit scheme, where IPMAN members are given credit lifeline to make payments for products supplied to their retail station three weeks after delivery.

The IPMAN operation controller maintained that, under no circumstance will any IPMAN member sell above the approved price because a monitoring team has been set to move round the outlets in order to ensure compliance and avoid diversion.

‘‘I can confirm to you that, massive loading is going on at all depots. As at today (yesterday), Capital oil has been able to load about 300 trucks, ditto for NIPCO, Folawiyo and others are doing the same.

With this level of product truck out, the country will soon be wet with petroleum products,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, the IPMAN boss has called on the Federal Government to deregulate the downstream sector, saying there was no better time than now to do so.

He lamented that the country cannot afford to continue witnessing this hardship year in year out, admitting that, this remained an embarrassing situation for the country.

He called on government to be courageous and remove subsidy on petrol.

Arms deal: Your utterances are unprofessional, Jonathan Blasts Sagay

A legal luminary Professor Itse Sagay SAN, has come under heavy knocks by former President Goodluck Jonathan over a statement that Jonathan should confess his involvement in the deal before he is arrested.

Jonathan faulted Sagay over the statement saying that as a respected learned scholar, he should know that you don’t hang a suspect on the pages of newspaper or via social media until he or she is found guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.

The former President in a statement issued by Dr. Abubakar Sulaiman, his former minister of National Planning, stated that, “one should expect the respected learned scholar to know that you don’t hang a suspect on the pages of newspaper or via social media until he or she is found guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction”.

Professor Sagay who is also chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Corruption, has advised Jonathan to secretly confess all he knew about the scandalous $2.1 billion arms deal, to which his name has been linked, by President Muhammadu Buhari.

He stated during the week that if Jonathan goes by the advice, he may be accorded the respect due to him by virtue of being a former president.

Sagay, however pointed out that the case of the former president being arrested relating to the arms scandal is a “sensitive one”, adding that his concession of defeat to Buhari during the March 28 presidential election does not make Jonathan a hero, as one good action could not correct several evil deeds.

Jonathan said the statement credited to Prof Sagay on Dec 23, 2015, that tended to vilify former President Jonathan on the ongoing arms scam is not only unfortunate but, unprofessional.

“Accordingly, even where the learned jurist feels passionate of such a sensitive but sensational issue, he should know the right route to the villa rather than taking such prejudicial position.

“It is high time our legal luminaries confined themselves to the noble ethics of their profession than toeing the path of some mischief politicians.

“And we pray that when the report of his committee finally comes out, it will reflect and incorporate the noble principles of rule of law, fair hearing and impartiality so as to meet the irreducible minimum standard expected in matters of this nature.

We also pray that it may not end up dashing, rather than raising the hopes of average Nigerian in the vintage APC fashion, as with most things these days”, he stated.

Ope Oo!!! Missing OAU ‘Law student’ found after 10 days

A student of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Bak-Abasi Umoh, who went missing for 10 days in the state, has been found.

Her mother told our correspondent over the phone that she returned to Ile-Ife, Osun State on Tuesday, December 22.

“She told us she was robbed of her phone and all the money she had,” her mother, Elizabeth, explained.

The girl’s mother said she was thankful that no harm had come to her daughter after being incommunicado for 10 days.

Saturday PUNCH learnt that when her family in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, could not reach her on the phone, they called her school friends, who said the last time they saw her on campus was on December 12.

As of the time our correspondent spoke with Bak-Abasi’s mother on Wednesday, she said her daughter was already on her way back home from Ile-Ife.

Her parents have been tight-lipped about the details of what really happened to her and where she was for those 10 days.

It would be recalled that when Bak-Abasi, said to be a Law student of OAU, was declared missing a week ago, her pictures circulated on the internet as her classmates and friends pleaded for information that might help in locating her.

Meanwhile, the Law students’ association of OAU said it has no evidence that she is a member of the department.

According to the President of the Law Student Society, OAU, said in a post on Facebook, “The news about this lost lady has been a subject of concern for Ife Law students as she claimed to be part of us but all evidence shows she is not.

“Our concern was only that a Nigerian was lost and needed to be found rather than a Law student.

I salute the effort of the entirety of the law students for the love and concern in the search.”

I have been disappointed but never sexually harassed –Simi

Simi
Pop diva, Simisola Ogunleye, popularly known as Simi, is one artiste who has got everything going for her at the moment.

The Mass Communication graduate of the Covenant University who is currently signed on to X3M Music, soared to national and international prominence following the success of the remix of her hit tune – Jamb Question which featured the highly talented Falz.

The 27-year-old has since become a household name, enjoying prominent mention in the media.

In a chat with Saturday Beats earlier in the week, the gifted songstress shared some intimate secrets about her life, revealing how growing up in the midst of boys gave her confidence and made her tough.

Simi also revealed that unlike some up and coming female artistes in the country, she had never been sexually harassed even though she had suffered disappointments in different forms in the past.

“I have been disappointed but never been sexually harassed. I have been very favoured in this regard.

My mother is a disciplinarian who always put us on the right path. Even at that, she allowed me be my own person and learn my own lessons,” she said.

The singer, who revealed that she wanted to be a lawyer as a child, said she turned down several juicy job opportunities to pursue a career in music.

“I wanted to be a lawyer and also an on air personality as a child. But now, I feel I would have been bored being a lawyer.

The love for music was too strong for me to resist. “I am very stubborn when pursuing my passion and goals.

I love to make my own mistakes. My mother had thought that after graduation from the university, music would just be a pastime for me.

I turned down several juicy jobs to pursue music,” she said.

When asked about her alleged romance with fellow up and coming act – Adekunle Gold, Simi simply refused to comment, saying she had no reaction to the rumoured relationship between the two of them.

She however called on fans to keep supporting her music as she was working hard to keep entertaining them with quality works.

FG Announces Fuel Subsidy Removal, Says Fuel Price Will Reduce

The Federal Government has announced that the pump price of petrol will drop to around N85 or N86 as from January 1st, 2016.

Minister of State for Petroleum, Emmanuel Kachikwu, disclosed this to journalists in Rivers whilst conducting a tour of facilities at the Port Harcourt refinery.

Speaking on the new pricing regime he said, “It is out. I signed off on it yesterday (Thursday). I imagined that in the next couple of days the marketers would get advice on that.

The nice thing about the PPPRA, where I signed up on it yesterday is that the price will be far below N87.

“So for the first time people will understand that the pricing modulation I was talking about is not a gimmick.

It is for real. We have gone to find out how we will be able fluctuate this market to reflect what the reality of crude market is.

The objective is that one, we cannot afford to continue to subsidize.

“We can’t even understand where those subsidies were going to. There is a lot of fraud elements in it so we need to cut that off.

“The second is the earning capacity of the Federal Government is deteriorating by the day with lower prices of crude and come out more.”

Concerning the scrapping of fuel subsidy, the Minister said the government could no longer afford to sustain the program considering the massive fraud that had tainted the program.

Kachikwu said the government had found that it was feasible to allow the international forces of supply and demand drive the price in a way that is economical for Nigeria and Nigerians.

Aries and Independence:

Aries personalities are independent. Being the first of the zodiac signs, they venture out and are go-getters, often leading the way.

Their upbeat and magnetic personality often entices others to follow their lead because Aries personalities bring excitement into others lives.

Aries and Friendship:

Aries are good friends, they always look out for their friends with caring and generosity and will protect them should the need arise and encourage them with their natural optimism.

If confronted, Aries can turn to be quite childish, they will fight back with their agressive nature and are known to have temper tantrums should they not get their way.

Aries and Business:

Aries are activists. If a business idea comes their way, they tend to plunge right in. Aries are more then willing to take a gamble and follow their dreams and goals.

However, if success is not immediate, they tend to lose interest and give up easily. Aries are notorious for not finishing what they have begun.

This is due to the low tolerance for boredom
and lack of patience. If the excitement is gone from their business idea, they go off and search for it elsewhere.

Aries Temperament:

Independence is key to Aries astrology, they do not like to take orders from others and enjoy getting their way.

They can get childish or moody should they be given orders that they do not like. Aries easily take offense to comments made.

Aries are self-involved and can be self-centered, if they do not pay attention to the feelings of others, Aries can easily become spoiled and resented by others.

In order to get their way, Aries will tell a lie if it seems advantageous to do so. They are however, not very good liars and other people can usually see through them.

Aries Deep Inside:

Underneath the strong, independent surface may lie insecurity. This is due to the intense drive to succeed and Aries put too much pressure on themselves, thus resulting in self-doubt however, the natural optimism and enthusiasm overtakes this and the underlying insecurity may never be known to others.

Aries in a Nutshell:

Aries is the first of the zodiac signs. Aries is the sign of the self, people born under this sign strongly project their personalities onto others and can be very self-oriented.

Aries tend to venture out into the world and leave impressions on others that they are exciting, vibrant and talkative.

Aries tend to live adventurous lives and like to be the center of attention, but rightly so since they are natural, confident leaders. Aries are enthusiastic about their goals and enjoy the thrill of the hunt, "wanting is always better then getting" is a good way to sum it up.

Aries are very impulsive and usually do not think before they act - or speak. Too often Aries will say whatever pops into their head and usually end up regretting it later!

Aries Love, Sex and Relationships

What it's like to date an Aries Woman:

Dating an Aries never lacks excitement. She is hot-blooded, and forceful, so you had better be able to handle the heat!

The Aries woman is for the person who likes an independent self-driven woman who can fend for herself and is not clingy and needy. An Aries woman requires freedom.

For the Aries woman, the best part of the relationship is the beginning, then the spark is there and she is trying to catch you to be hers. She will find happiness in a long-term relationship because she enjoys sharing everything with her partner. She will not only have a romantic partner but a best friend too.

She has a great need for love and passion but she will never let a man become the master, she considers her partner to be equal.

Aries women are not for domineering men. She will be faithful but she expects the same in return.

She can be jealous because she wants a man to give her all of his attention, "all or nothing", so her jealously is rooted in her possessiveness, she has to be number one in his eyes.

She will always encourage and give strength to her partner so an Aries woman is great to have in times of despair or need, she will always be there for you. In order to have this happy ending, she needs to feel appreciated and loved.

What it's like to date an Aries Man:

An Aries man has a lust for adventure so if you are thinking about having a relationship with an Aries man, be prepared for fast-paced adventure, novelty and excitement.

He is always eager to try new things - including relationships.

That is not to say that every Aries man will only provide an exciting and short-lived relationship, but this is usually the case.

He might stick around if you are the type of woman that enjoys having the man take the lead and basking in his glory.

He enjoys challenge so if you are the woman to offer challenges to him - like playing hard to get - he might stick around longer.

Remember, this man is all about the thrill of the chase. Do not however, act as if you don't care about him.
He needs you to be "swept off your feet" by him.

Appear innocent- hard-to-get and he will be wrapped around your little finger. Never take advantage of the Aries man because his short temper will turn into a fury of anger and he way leave and never look back.

How To Attract Aries:

Let Aries know that you admire them, they thrive of admiration and followers. Let them know that you love their zest for life and that you find them intriguing, they love compliments more then most other astrology signs of the zodiac.

Compliment them physically and mentally, they like conversation about intellectual topics and engage them in a lively discussion, or a friendly debate.

They love the challenge and the stimulation of good, intelligent conversation. Ask them for advice, let them know that you look up to them.

Remember, Aries is the first sign of the zodiac and the most forward and independent, they love followers. Do not be a push over, do not keep your opinions to yourself because Aries will quickly get bored if you agree with everything they say.

Do not attempt to control them however, they do not like taking orders. Aries are very capable people so if you go with their plans, you are sure to have a good time!

If they have a suggestion for something to do, go with the flow, they like to be in control of what goes on.

Aries Erogenous Zone:

The head is Aries' most powerful erogenous zone. Stroking their hair and rubbing their scalp will make them feel relaxed and heighten their sensations.

Nibble the ear, for especially the men, they will not be able to resist this, he will get uncontrollable urges and you will soon be all his!

Sex With Aries:

The Aries zodiac sign is straightforward, aggressive and adventurous and this is reflected in their approach to sex.

Expect it to be physical, quick and rough, they like to dominate and have the upper position.

Nnewi Gas Explosion: APC calls for forensic investigation

All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday called on Anambra State government to set up a Judicial Panel of Enquiry to investigate the Nnewi fire incidence of Thursday, which claimed many lives and property.

The party in Anambra State has also commiserated with the families and associates of the victims of the fire disaster and urged them to find the heart to bear “the great loss in what ought to be a season of joy.”

In a statement signed by the State Publicity Secretary, Mr. Okelo Madukaife, APC said the needed Judicial Panel of Enquiry with all the required expertise should embark on a forensic investigation of the incident, the immediate and remote cause and recommend solutions.

It also demanded a full-scale coroner’s inquest, just as it asked the Anambra State House of Assembly to set up a committee to investigate the town planning aspect of the disaster.

The statement reads in part, “The silence from Nnewi North Local Government, the only local Government without an elected leadership in Anambra State and the chorus-type comments from the state authorities after this disaster have not done much to raise hopes for a difference.

There is a lot to learn from Lagos State particularly on the incident of the collapse of a building in The Synagogue Church of all Nations, killing over 80.

“In this wise, we call on the Nnewi North Local Government and Anambra State Government -in three arms – to set up forensic investigations of all the ramifications of this Christmas Eve fire in Nnewi.

We require a Judicial Panel sitting on the matter, as well as a committee on the Anambra State House of Assembly dealing with the softer side of the incident, upon which Anambra State can build a new safety foundation.

Nnewi North Local Government should promptly identify all the victims of the event and their family contacts.

APC urged the state government to rise up to its responsibilities stressing, “This catastrophe has cast a dark cloud no doubt over the Christmas celebration in Anambra State, which also recently lost lives to police excesses which has not been challenged by even those to whom Anambra State people’s lives are entrusted.

“We feel saddened at the human loss, but more terribly about the penchant to deviate from planning laws and norms, in that the fire in the gas plant also killed persons from neighbouring houses.

“We are forced to ask, with eyes on the future, if gas plants are supposed to have neighbouring houses by law and logic.

We have no doubt that accidents must occur from time to time, but our take is that if this plan was isolated, casualties would be less.

“Next to life, we worry about what the loss of a dynamic industry contributing its quota to the growth of the economy of Anambra State, where incentives for the emergence of other industries in the same league have been non-existent in reality.

“We call on the Anambra State Government to rise above its usual laxity that sees high government officials visit the scene of accidents early, wear rehearsed long faces, and throw cash at victims for ‘eye-service’ reasons, but stop short of taking pro-active lawful measures to forestall similar occurrences.

“We recall the burning of over 70 lives in a tanker fire in Onitsha and note that no investigations commissioned.

We recall the negligence that led to the wear off of earth base supporting a concrete road bridge at Nkpor which attracted only actions at the spur of the moment.

We recall other such incidents of both the incidents

[Intl News] African Union urges Burundi to accept peacekeeping forces

AU Commission Chairwoman Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma
The African Union says it has written to Burundi’s president urging him to consent to the deployment of a peacekeeping force to quell the country’s escalating unrest.

In statement A.U. Commission Chairwoman Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma stressed that there is no ulterior motive in sending the troops other than to assist the people of Burundi.

Burundi’s President Pierre Nkurunziza has rejected the A.U.’s plans to deploy 5,000 peacekeepers, describing it as an invasion force.

At least 400 people have died since April when it was announced that Nkurunziza would run for a third term in office.

Violent Street demonstrations opposing Nkurunziza’s bid for a third term led to an attempted coup in May.

Fayose is a social disgrace to Ekiti – Group

Gov. Ayo Fayose
Youths from Ekiti State have described their State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, as a social disgrace to the common pride of the people due to his unwholesome behaviour.

The youths, under the aegis of Ekiti Kete Youth Forum, EKYF, said Ekiti State used to be known for academic and moral values, even before its creation and endowed with professors of local and international reputes, youths with academic and moral backgrounds, but that it is disheartening and regretting that the state has lost its pride under Fayose.

EKYF, in a statement issued its Director of Publicity, Tope Idowu, condemned Fayose’s idea of mocking the sensibility of Ekiti people, especially the less educated by taking the advantage of their status and celebrating poverty for them like Christmas instead of eradicating it, under the deceit of “Stomach infrastructure.”

“It is unheard of that Governor Fayose, instead of facing serious governance, has rather become common in the market as a seller of pepper, meat, fish, palm oil and so on. An act which has not only denigrated the highly esteemed office, but also deceitful as it aims at distracting the people from noticing his negative tendencies towards serious governance.

“Since Fayose resumed office as the Governor of Ekiti on 16 October, 2014, Ekiti has always been in the news for wrong reasons, due to series of shameful and uncultured acts being exhibited by Mr. Fayose on a daily basis, as he has also neglected his responsibility as a governor of a state and unofficially assumed the responsibility of the spokesperson of the opposition party (People’s Democratic Party) in the country.

“We also lament the high level of unemployment of youths in Ekiti State, as it is most unfortunate that Mr. Fayose has not created any meaningful job opportunity for youths in the state since he became the Governor.

Rather, he derives pleasure engaging them as praise singers and social media propagandists by giving them peanuts, thus subjecting them to financial slavery and moral relegation” it stated.

The youths also condemned the inability of Fayose to meet up with his obligations as the governor by paying the arrears and the salaries of the workers, even after getting bailout from the federal government.

They said the fact that Ekiti is only a civil service state, and that the civil servants were not being duly paid and businesses not moving, “yet Mr. Governor is less concerned about their welfare, this has informed our strongly condemning his idea of imposing heavy tax on the governed even with their small scale businesses, the tipper drivers and meat sellers who are struggling to feed their families.”

The group also said the recent act of insubordination exhibited by the Governor in the House of Assembly while presenting the 2016 budget, calls for serious condemnation, as it was a clear mockery of the legislature, which is a reflection of his lack of regard and respect for the legislative arm since he resumed office in 2014.
