Afe Babalola wants reforms in private varsities games

Afe Babalola (SAN)
The founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, Chief Afe Babalola (SAN), has advocated for reforms in the Nigerian Private Universities Games.

He said organisers of the games should review the age of participants to between 16 and 25 so that the event could serve the purpose of talent discovery it is meant for.

The senior advocate spoke on Saturday at the closing ceremony of the 6th edition of NPUGA hosted by ABUAD in Ado Ekiti where he was honoured by Sports Writers Association of Nigeria.

Former African sprint queen and five-time Olympian, Mrs. Mary Onyali, was also honoured at the event by the institution for adding “colour, character and candour to the event” with her presence.

Benson Idahosa University, Benin City, topped the medals table with 40 gold, 26 silver and 14 bronze medals.

They were followed by ABUAD with 23 gold, 28
silver and 19 bronze medals, and Igbinedion University, Okada with seven gold, nine silver and 16 bronze medals among the 21 private universities that participated in the games.

Speaking on the set objectives of talents discovery, Babalola said, “To me, this means you should limit the age of participants to those who possess talents which have not been discovered.

“Only youths who possess talents which have yet to be discovered should participate and indeed qualify to participate in NPUGA. An adult who is between 27 and 40 years has no hidden talents to be discovered any longer.

“I therefore suggest that only youths between the age of 16 and 25 should be allowed to compete so that their talents can be discovered.”
