EKITI 2018: ERO Congratulates APC Aspirants, Laments Clashes Among Supporters |PoliFocus

Ekiti Rebirth Organisation, ERO, the socio-cultural movement campaigning to see the Special Adviser on Political Matters to the President, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, emerge as the next governor of Ekiti State, has congratulated all the 28 aspirants who have so far purchased the nomination form to run for the governorship election on the platform the All Progressives Congress, APC.

In a release signed by its Director-General, Chief Ranti Adebisi, a.k.a Opomulero, the Socio-Cultural movement said it saw the development as a positive one and an endorsement of the chances of the party at the poll, but which should breed healthy competition rather than a destructive one.

He however lamented the ugly incidents that have started rearing their heads, whereby the supporters of the two ex-governors in the race were confronting themselves in bloody clashes, warning that the party can only achieve its aim of winning the election if peace, harmony and collective consciousness are allowed to reign.

According to Chief Adebisi, as it inches towards the 5th May 2018 primary election where a candidate will emerge from among the lot, it is imperative that the party avoided falling victim to factional battles, rather, everyone should see the election as one that does not demand arms, limbs and life of anyody as sacrifice.

His words: “We don’t have to see things through the same aperture. We must embrace our different opinions, we should be able to have heated conversation that will not degenerate to drawing weapons against one another in battle. As we discuss how we will tackle the various problems confronting our people, we should try to figure out solutions without conflict.”

“The maxim that love is superior to law should serve as our guiding principle now, more than any other time. We should be able to go through the primaries and a winner emerge in an atmosphere of peace and harmony devoid of rancor. This is what will make healing become easy after the primaries, so we can all confront our common enemy with unity of purpose,” he said.

He however observed that it was unfortunate the news coming out of the APC family to the public as they approach the May 5 primaries was not a good one. What makes it more depressing, he said, was the fact that it was from the camps of the two former governors of the state who have been trading blames on who drew the first blood.

Adebisi sighted the two incidents that occurred in quick session as ridiculous. The first was the threat threat to the life of the State Public Relations Officer of the Party, Chief Taiwo Olatunbosun and other Exco members of the party by one Joseph Olanbiwonnu a.ka. Mentilo, which occurred last week, and the second being the conflict at Ifaki Ekiti during the weekend, where the followers of both ex- governors of the state engaged themselves in bloody fisticuffs and had to drag themselves to the police station.

According to the ERO DG, it appeared the two factions had not learnt anything from the bloody clashes that characterised the 2009 rerun election, which pitted the two ex-governors against each other and turned the state to a war theatre. Iin the process, many lives were lost, a situation which he said fell short of expectations from the camp of progressives. He therefore advised the two warring factions to rein in their teeming supporters, not to put the chances of the party in jeopardy.

Our rival PDP and other parties coming into the election are beatable and we will surely beat them fair and square. But we cannot do this in an atmosphere of rancour. Rather than seeing each other as warring factions, the, two ex-governors should join hands with the rest of us to go into the coming election in an atmosphere of peace. Our focus must be to defend the progressive ideology, we must sway the interest of our people towards our direction with fine agenda, we must nurture them out of poverty and squalor, which the present government of Ayodele Fayose has dumped them, And we must restore their hopes for a better tomorrow,"  Adebisi said.
