Democracy Day: How To Make Nigerians Love Nigeria |PoliFocus

It's no longer news that Nigeria is celebrating her 21st years of unbroken democracy since 1999. When Major General Abdusalam Abubakar decided to pave way for a democratic system of government. Abubakar handed over to Chief Olusegun Obasanjo who was a former military head of state.

Can we genuinely say that power was indeed transferred to a civilian? Let's boycott that for another day.

Since, 1999, we have had four presidents. Olusegun Aremu Obasanjo, Umar Musa Y'Adua who died in office, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan who lost to the the incumbent  Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.

Can we look back and give kudos to these set of people? The answer is hell, no! Since the creation of Nigeria through the marriage of inconveniency otherwise known as the amalgamation by Late Sir Lord Luggard in 1914, Nigeria as a country has being crawling like a toddler.

Many factors are seen to have contributed and still contributing to this show of shame. We aren't united as a nation. We celebrate ethnicity, nepotism and bigotry over our general interests.

How patriotic are you? Only a few are  patriotic, many people who are calling for support for the nation are sycophants. Remove the national feeding bottle from them and see them turning wailers within seconds.

We have over 200 ethnic groups but we chose to be celebrating only 4 of them. You don't marginalize people and expect the best from them.

Basic amenities should be provided as they are part of our rights as citizens. Portable water, good roads, stable electricity supply, security, good health care, sound educational institutions, among others should be given the required attention.

Above us, our laws should be reviewed. They are too weak and archaic. It takes ages for justice to be done in the courts of law. I keep asking myself why are we using two different laws in the same country. Penal Code for the Northerners while Criminal Code for the Southerners.

Few countries are without ethnicities, even among the Arabs. We should make use of our diversity for our progress. The only way to get a united nation where people would have a sense of belonging is to provide a level platform for all the citizens, irrespective of the tribe nor state.

Our leaders should up and doing. They fan the ember of discord among us to their political gain and we docile followers refuse to wake up to the reality.

Can't we have a president who will fix our epileptic power supply? Can't we have a president who would have the mental capacity to make a positive contribution towards the development of the country, and not (an) ethnic group(s)?
Can't we have a president that we will all be proud of? Can't we have a president who will unify all?

All these can be achieved gradually if we start voting rightly. The bunch of the blame is at the doorstep of the citizens. Democracy is all about the people and its high time we took the bull by the horn. Let's continue to demand for good governance.
