Follow Up: DPO who beat up female traffic warden in Ogun, demoted

The Divisional Police Officer, DPO, in charge of Ikenne Division of Ogun State, Patrick Onwu, who beat up a female traffic warden for flagging down his private car at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC filling station on IBB Boulevard in the state, has been demoted. 

Daily Post reported that the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, on Thursday ordered the demotion and immediate transfer of the DPO.

It would be recalled that the traffic warden, Anifat Bello, who was discharging her official duty at the same filling station on Monday, had flagged down the DPO’s car as he approached the junction, which allegedly angered him.Onwu, who was on mufti, drove into the filling station, pulled over and changed into a police uniform, and allegedly descended on the traffic warden, leaving her with a swollen face.

The state Police Public Relations Officer,PPRO, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the incident, had told newsmen that the Commissioner of Police, CP, Abdulmajid Ali, was unhappy about the incident and had directed that the matter be thoroughly investigated.

According to Adejobi, “The woman traffic officer has reported the matter to the CP and he has directed that the matter be thoroughly investigated.“If the allegation is true, I am very sure the CP will know what to do.Are you a One Minute man?

“The CP was not happy when the woman came with a swollen face,” Adejobi had said.However, the IGP, Arase, who got to know about the incident, ordered that Onwu’s file be transferred to the force headquarters in Abuja so further disciplinary actions can be taken.

The IGP ordered that he (Onwu) be demoted to a Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP, from Superintendent of Police, SP.
