Senate Today: Read Senate Proceedings For Wednesday 22nd 2016 |PoliFocus

Lawmakers of Nigeria 8th Senate had a productive legislative day.

EXECUTIVE SESSION


Today's plenary was introduced with a closed door session that lasted for an hour 30mins where issues relating to the smooth running of the Senate and the National Assembly.


Senate President Bukola Saraki presided over plenary.

Senator Gbenga Ashafa moved for the adoption of votes and proceedings of Tuesday 21st June 2016, and Senator Andy Ubah seconded.

PETITION


Senator Tayo Alasaoudura presented a petition from members of his constituents disengaged from FUTA primary school without due process.

Senator Ovie Omo-Agege presented a petition from his constituent over alleged acts of oppression from Conoil

Senator David Umaru also raised a petition from a member of his constituency against Professor Nwabueze of University of Abuja over alleged victimization.

POINT OF ORDER


Senator Joshua Dariye raised a point of order concerning the Ambassadorial Nominees List sent last week by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Senators Olusola Adeyeye, Foster Ogola, Sunny Ogbuoji and Shehu Sani contributed to the point of order saying that their states were not represented in the list which defies the Federal Character principles.

The Senate resolved to summon the Minister of Foreign Affairs & SGF to appear before the Senate Committee on foreign affairs to explain the irregularities of the list before commencement of the screening. The committee will report back in one week.

PRESENTATION OF BILLS


Eight bills were presented for first reading they include:

1.      Anti-Torture Bill, 2016 (HB. 120) by Senator Ali Ndume (Senate Leader).

2.      Telecommunications and Postal Offences Act CAP T5, LFN 2004 (Amendment) Bill, 2016 (HB. 216) by Senator Ali Ndume (Senate Leader).

3.      National Crop Varieties and Livestock Breeds (Registration, etc) Act CAP N27, LFN 2004 (Amendment) Bill, 2016 (HB. 218) by Senator Ndume.

4.      National Grazing Reserves Agency (Est., etc) Bill, 2016 (SB. 292) by Rabiu M. Kwankwaso (Kano Central) and others.

5.      National Ranches Commission (Est., etc) Bill, 2016 (SB. 293) by Senator Barnabas Gemade (Benue North East).

6.      Police Act CAP P395 LFN 2004 (Amendment) Bill, 2016 (SB. 294) by Senator Abu Ibrahim (Katsina South).

7.      South East Development Commission (Est., etc.) Bill, 2016 (SB. 303) by Senator Samuel Anyanwu (Imo East) and Senator Stella Oduah

8.      Historic Sites and Preservation Protection Bill, 2016 (SB. 304) by Senator Shehu Sani (Kaduna Central).

CONSIDERATION OF REPORTS


A Report from Land and Transportation Committee on Nigerian Railway Corporation Act '55 ( Repeal & Re-enactment) Bill 2016 (SB.01) was also considered.  Senator Gbenga Ashafa presented the report.

The Senate president commended the sponsor of the bill and the committee  adding that the clause-by-clause consideration of the Nigerian Railway Bill will be after the short break of the Senate.

ADJOURNMENT
The Senate Leader moves for the Senate to stand down other activities in the order paper to next legislative day, Minority leader seconds.

Senate President puts the question and the Senate adjourned to Thursday 23rd June, 2016.
