The Ekiti State House of Assembly has already begun the review of the 2016 budget where monies earmarked for some projects would be diverted to others.
On Tuesday at the plenary, the Ekiti State 2016 Review Appropriation Bill passed second reading on the floor of the assembly while three other laws were read for the first time.
The bills are the Ekiti State Teaching Service Commission (Amendment) Bill 2016; the Ekiti StateHealth management Board (Amendment) Bill 2016 and the Ekiti State Housing Corporation (Amendment) Bill 2016.
According to a statement by the Special Assistant (Media) to the Speaker, Stephen Gbadamosi, the state lawmakers during the plenary presided over by Speaker Kola Oluwawole observed that recent economic developments in the state made the amendment necessary.
They explained that there were some projects for which funds were allocated but which were not being carried out for one reason or the other.
The lawmakers felt that such funds should be re-directed to other areas where funds had becomeinadequate, citing example of the proposed airport project which had been stalled.
They also cited some sectors where allocated funds had become surplus, where such funds could be used in other areas.According to the Chairman, House Committee on Finance, Abiola Jeje, it is important to pass the supplementary budget to ensure transparency and accountability in governance.
This, he said, would allow the government to attendto any emergency work that needed the attention of the government.
