Wow!! A’Ibom Assembly elects first female deputy speaker

A member representing Okobo State Constituency in Akwa Ibom State, Felicia Bassey, has been elected as the new Deputy Speaker of the state House of Assembly.

Her election followed the nullification of the election of the former Deputy Speaker, Effiong Bassey who had represented Oron/Udung Uko State Constituency on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in assembly by the Appeal Court.

The new Deputy Speaker was sworn into office by the Speaker, Hon. Onofiok Luke, after she accepted her nomination and unanimous election for the number two position by her colleagues.

Bassey was nominated by Friday Iwok, member representing Abak state constituency and seconded by Hon. Nse Essien of Onna state constituency.

The new Deputy Speaker who held a Bachelor’s degree in Law, is the immediate-past chairperson for Okobo Local Government Area of the state.

Administering the oath of office on her, the Speaker charged her to live up to her colleagues’ confidence in her ability to carry out her duties in the assembly effectively.

Members at the plenary described her new office as well deserving, and expressed confidence in her ability to discharge the functions of the office optimally.
