Kogi Assembly Mayhem: Senate Agrees To Take Over Kogi House Of Assembly

The Senate has agreed with the House of Representatives to take over the legislative functions of the Kogi State House of Assembly pending the restoration of normalcy in the assembly. Channels TV reports.

The Senate has also declared that the impeachment proceedings embarked upon by five members of the state assembly is null and void.

The upper chamber took these decisions after looking at the report from the House of Representatives on the matter.


The Senate consequently directed the Inspector General of Police to seal the Kogi State House of Assembly complex until the matter is resolved.

The House of Representatives had approved a recommendation that the National Assembly should take over the legislative functions of the Kogi State House of Assemblydue to its leadership crisis.

The recommendation was made by a delegation mandated by the House of Representatives to look into what it called illegal removal of the Speaker of the State House.

The House of Representatives condemned the actions of the five lawmakers which were said to be in clear violation of Section 92 Sub-section C of the Nigerian Constitution.

The House also condemned the action of the Nigerian Police in subverting the Constitution by allowing the actions of the five lawmakers.The latest decision by the Senate meets therequirement of Section 11 (4) of the Constitution.
