Senate Today: Read Senate Proceedings For Tuesday 26th April, 2016

Following the approval and adoption of the votes and proceedings of the last plenary on April 21st, 2016, the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria had a productive legislative day as summarised below:

The Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki presided over plenary.

PETITIONS

Senator Dino Melaye laid a petition from his constituent over unlawful termination of appointment by the Bureau of Public Enterprise.

Senator Akpan Bassey also laid a petition from his constituent seeking intervention of the senate against the Police force.

The Senate President referred the petitions to Committee on Ethics Privileges and Public Petitions.

POINT OF ORDER

Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremmadu raised a point of order on the resolution of the senate in a motion on tackling perennial problems of farmers and herdsmen , he sought clarity on why the public hearing has not been organised by the concerned committee.

Senate Committee Chairman on agriculture Abdullahi Adamu spokethat plans are underway to schedule the public hearing.The Senate president urged that the Committee plans should be fasttracked.

PRESENTATION OF REPORTS

Three reports were presented and they include;
1. Report of the Joint Committees on Police Affairs, National Security & Intelligence in respect of a motion on the unfortunate recurrence of kidnapping and hostage-taking in Nigeria.
2. Report of the committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters on frivolous Petition Bill, 2016 (SB).
3. Report of the committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters in respect of a motion on the differences in content of section 18 of the Armed Forces Act Cap. A20 LFN2014 and 2010 respectively.

CONSIDERATION OF BILLS

A bill for an Act to provide for the Governance and Institutional framework for the Petroleum Industry and for other matters connected there with by Senator Omotayo D. Alasadura (Ondo Central).

The above bill was stepped down to allow the law makers go through it and for the sponsor to include the financial compendium.

MOTIONS

The first motion of the day was a motion on the outbreak of gastroenteritisepidemic in Ohafia and some parts of Umunneochi Local Government Areas of Abia North by Senator Mao Ohabunwa.

Deputy Chief whip Senator Olushola Adeyeye , Senators Jibrin Barau and Adamu Aliero spoke in support of the motion. The prayers were adopted with an additional prayer from Senator Joshua Lidani.

The second motion was on the need to prosecute Building Laws Violators by Senator Nelson Effiong (Akwa Ibom South).

ADJOURNMENT

Having exhausted the content of the order paper, Senate leader Ali Ndume moved for adjournment and minority Senate leader Senator Godswill Akpabio seconds.

Senate President puts the question and the Senate adjourned to Wednesday 27th April, 2016.‪
