Spain Coach Vicente Del Bosque Sets To Resign By July 15 —Reports |PoliFocus

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque submitted his “irrevocable” resignation to federation president Angel Maria Villar earlier this week, according to Spain media reports.

Del Bosque and Villar met this past Tuesday after La Roja returned to Spain, at which time Del Bosque told the RFEF chief that he would resign and would not accept any further role with the federation, AS has reported, citing anonymous sources.
According to Marca, Del Bosque will not make the news official until the federation’s general assembly on July 15 or until Villar has announced his replacement.

The 65-year-old had previously said he would step down following Euro 2016. Spain lost to Italy in the round-of-16 stage on Monday.

Former Granada coach Joaquin Caparros, former Spain under-21 boss Julen Lopetegui and ex-La Roja coach Jose Antonio Camacho all having been tipped to succeed him.

Marca have reported that Caparros is Villar’s preferred candidate and that the new coach is expected to be named on July 19.

Caparros, who has managed a host of Spanish clubs including Villarreal, Sevilla, Athletic Bilbao and Levante, said earlier this week that he would be interested in taking charge of the national team, but would prefer to see Del Bosque stick around.

Del Bosque, who took charge of Spain’s national team after Euro 2008, is expected to speak on Thursday night in the Cadena SER show, El Larguero.Villar asked Del Bosque not to make the decision publicuntil the next RFEF assembly on July 15, or at least until he has announced a replacement for Del Bosque, reports said.

Del Bosque guided Spain to wins at the World Cup in 2010 and Euro 2012, but then oversaw their shock group-stage exit at the World Cup in Brazil in 2014.

His contract runs until the end of Euro 2016, and up until now the former Real Madrid coach had been coy on his future plans but said he would discuss the issue with Villar.

After the loss to Italy, he said: “There is no point going over and over this, I will speak with the president and decide the best thing for the national team.”

Spain now turn their focus on trying to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia from a group that also includes Italy. The first qualifying game will be in September.
