University of Ibadan To Admit 3,000 Of 29,000 UTME Candidates |PoliFocus

The Vice-Chancellor, University of Ibadan (UI), Professor Idowu Olayinka, yesterday, disclosed that only 3,000 of over 29,000 candidates who scored 200 and above in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and chose the institution would be offered admission.


Olayinka pointed out that poor funding, infrastructural deficit, student-lecturer ratio and limitation of hostel accommodation would not allow the university go beyond its present carrying capacity.

While speaking on the topic, Challenges of Building A World-Class University, at the 68th Interdisciplinary Research Discourse, under the headship of Professor Adeyinka Aderinto, the Vice Chancellor said the FederalGovernment must decide if it wants its universities to be globally competitive or not, by adequately funding research and fixing infrastructural deficits.

Stressing that research is the backbone of any tertiary institution, Olayinka said government should go beyond expressing regret at the ranking of its universities at public functions by allocating more funds to teaching and research.
