David de Gea Reveals How Close He Came To Being Gigi Buffon's Replacement At Juventus |PoliFocus

David De Gea was being lined up as Gianluigi Buffon’s long-term replacement at Juventus’s relegation for match-fixing in 2006, only for the legendary Italian to stay.

The Italian giants were relegated from Serie A in the summer of 2006 after being found guilty of attempting to influence the selection of referees.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Patrick Vieira, Fabio Cannavaro, Lillian Thuram and Gianluca Zambrotta were among the big names who immediately jumped ship.

Buffon, who at the time was 32 and had not won the Champions League, was initially undecided about his future.

Michelangelo Rampulla, revealed the then 16-year-old goalkeeper was their No.1 choice to bring in.

He said: “We had made a list of potential signings and David De Gea, who at the time was very young, was Juventus’ first-choice.”
