Is’haq Modibbo-Kawu, Director-General of the NBC made this disclosure at a news conference in Abuja on Thursday while addressing journalists on the International Conference for African Broadcasters (AFRICAST) scheduled for October 18, 2016.
The money was part of the proceeds from the sales of spectrum made during the tenure of former DG, Emeka Mba and was seized by the EFCC in March 2016.
According to Modibbo-Kawu, the NBC is working towards obtaining the money from the anti-graft agency in order to fasttrack the digitization process.
He said that President Buhari is aware of the importance of the Digital Switch Over to Nigeria’s economic success and they are ready to use the digital revolution as a major starting point for revolutionary approach to employment in the country.
The EFCC had accused the former DG, Mba, Technology Advisor LLP, and others of diverting N10 billion from the N34 billion paid by telecommunicationsgiant, MTN to the NBC which was meant for digital television broadcasting in the country. Subsequently, it seized the funds which it alleged was recovered from the accused persons.
In another development, President Buhari has directed that the recruitment exercise into the police be suspended pending the resolution of the clash between the Senate and the Police Service Commission (PSC).
Abu Ibrahim, Chairman, Senate Committee on Police Affairs, yesterday, said that the President had to intervene in the matter due to the difference of opinion between the Senate and the PSC.
He stated that while the Senate favoured the appointment of nine persons per local government, the PSC wanted equality of states as the basis for appointment. He stated that the communities will be better served if more policemen are recruited from states with higher population.
“And the reason for that is that we are poised to give emphasis to community policing. The local governments are the smallest recognised unit by the constitution. So, nine per local government will form the nucleus for this community policing per local government. The obstacle was equality of states,” he stated.
“Some people felt that it is not representative of federal character. I asked them what about what is happening in the National Assembly, in which the number of persons per state in the House of Representatives is bythe size of the local governments of that state, while the Senate is based on equality of states.”
