EFCC Commences Move To Seize Fayose’s Houses In Lagos And Abuja |PoliFocus

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) officials have commenced the seizure of Ekiti State governor Ayo Fayose's properties in Lagos and Abuja amid claims that he acquired them using public funds.

Highly critical of President Muhammadu Buhari, Governor Fayose has recently been indicted over his role in the last gubernatorial election in the state. Of late, he and former minister of state for defence Senator Musiliu Obanikoro have been under investigation for receiving N4.745bn (£15.6m) from former national security adviser Col Sambo Dasuki.

They are under investigation for receiving N4.745bn (£15.6m) from former national security adviser to fund the last governorship election in Ekiti State.

Apparently, the cash was sourced from the impress account of the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) run by Col Dasuki when he was at the helm.

Governor Fayose has also been accused of purchasinghouses in Dubai, using Ekiti State funds. As part of the ongoing investigation against him, the EFCC plans to seize four duplexes owned by Governor Fayose on Victoria Island in Lagos State and one located at 44 Osun Crescent, Maitama, Abuja.Apparently, the EFCC plans to invoke the Assets for feiture clause to seize the properties in line with sections 28 and 34 of the EFCC (Establishment Act) 2004 and Section 13 (1) of the Federal High Court Act, 2004.

After freezing Governor Fayose’s Zenith Bank accounts, the anti-graft agency alleged that it had uncovered details of how he had been receiving kickbacks from state contractors.

One EFCC source added: “Investigations showed that the properties were bought with bribes from Ekiti State contractors. Some of the properties were not bought in Fayose’s name but through proxies, so, we will seize all the properties by God’s grace.”

In a 10-paragraph counter-affidavit, the EFCC accused Governor Fayose of using the proceeds of crime to purchase properties.

In his reaction, however, Governor Fayose said all the properties linked to him were not bought with stolen funds.Governor Fayose's spokesman Lere Olayinka, said any property that might be linked to him or his company was bought legitimately and his properties were duly declared in his assets declaration form and sources of such funds were not illicit.

He added that since the money he got for his election was from legitimate sources and not from the Onsa, how it is spent remainshis own business and not that of anyone else. -Nigerian Watch
