School bus sank in flood water "like the Titanic," says pupil

School children burst into tears as their school bus floated into a ditch and sank in flood water on the first day back to school.

One pupil told Sky News it was "like the Titanic" and said soaking wet children started smashing the bus windows after being stranded in the water.
Grace Abbott, 15, said passengers had pleaded with the driver not to try to go through the flood, which has blocked the road between Newton on Ouse and Tollerton near York since before Christmas.

But she said he ignored them and within seconds the bus started filling with water.

"Most of the girls were crying and the boys were shaking," she said.

She described how the bus started moving sideways with the driver unable to steer.

"It started floating and then it capsized into a ditch, and before it capsized loads of water gushed through," she said

It was pretty much like the Titanic - it was going."

After more than half an hour in water which was lapping round the top of the seats the pupils were rescued by fire fighters who waded in and carried them to safely.

North Yorkshire County Council said an investigation has been launched into how the bus, with 26 children from Easingwold School on board, came to be on a closed road.

“We put road closure signs out during flooding for a very good reason - to keep people safe,” said County Councillor Don Mackenzie, North Yorkshire’s Executive Member for Highways.

The council said it had not received any reports of injuries to pupils, all of whom had either gone home or had carried on to school.
