Rio Olympics: Nigeria’s Johnson Akinyemi Out Of Canoe Slalom |PoliFocus

Nigeria's Johnathan Akinyemi competes in the Men's K1 kayak slalom competition at the Whitewater stadium during the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro on August 7, 2016.

Jonathan Akinyemi failed to make a mark in slalom canoeing on Wednesday at the Rio Olympics after placing 20th in a field of 21.

The UK-based 27-year-old Nigerian could only record a time of 104.59 in his second run in the men’s kayak singles event.

His time was just a few seconds better than the 107.49 he recorded in his first run.

However, it was not just enough as the best 15 in the event advanced to the semi-finals and final of later on Wednesday.

Italy’s Giovanni De Gennar won the heat with a time of 86.85, recorded in his first run.

Akinyemi was the only African in the competition.

At the 2012 Summer Olympics he competed in the K-1 event, finishing 21st in the heats, and failing to qualify for the semi-finals.
