Ekiti Varsity Workers Protest Stoppage Of Subvention |PoliFocus

The various industrial unions in Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti (EKSU) Monday paralysed activities in the school to protest government's alleged stoppage of subvention to the school, non-payment of  six months salary arrears as well non-remittance of deductions to their cooperatives.

The unions that participated in the protest held outside the school were the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), Non-Accademic Staff Union of Universities (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The aggrieved staff stopped vehicular and human movement in and out of the institution as they locked the two gates of the institution which hindered the commencement of 2015/16 second semester examination.

They converted their vehicles to their offices while some of them were in groups under the trees discussing the development.

Speaking about their plight, Chairman of SSANU, Mr.Kolapo Olatunde, alleged that the government released subvention last to the school in December last year, adding that the staff had been on 20 percent salary since January this year to date.

" The government has erroneously believed that the management takes care of the full salary payment without the subvention. But the school has been augumenting the payment with N250m monthly.

"We also heard that the state  government is not putting EKSU in the agenda of bailout from the federal government, giveing erroneous impression that all is well with us, whereas we have been suffering in silence."

Chairman of NAAT, Engineer Awogbemi Omobola, attributed the non-payment of the staff's full salary to the fact that the institution has exhausted all its available resources to pay net salaries of workers.

He said: "We have remained patient with the management because it has been trying, but with this protest, we want to tell Ekiti and the world that they should not allow the institution to collapse as this is the only asset the state has."

In his comment, Mr. Tope Akanmu, the institution's NASU chairman who itemized their demands, urged the government to resume the payment of monthly subvention to the institution and also include it in the bailout scheme from the federal government.

He lamented that despite series of letters written to the state government before the last convocation in June, nothing had been done to alleviate the suffering of the institution's staff.

Efforts to get the school's reaction failed as its Public Relations Officer, Mr. Bunmi Ajibade, did not pick the calls made across to him.
