Starvation? Thousands Of Venezuelans Cross To Colombia In Search Of Food |PoliFocus

Thousands of Venezuelans crossed the border into Colombia on Sunday to buy food and medicine.

According to Sky News, the pedestrian crossing, which had been closed for almost a year, opened temporarily for 12 hours.

The crowd crossed peacefully and went straight to the shops in the Colombian city of Cucuta.

Javier Gutierrez said: "I came here to buy rice, sugar, milk, medicine and whatever else we can get because we already don't have anything to eat. We're starving."

Elsa Garrido added: "They gave us a free pass and we are taking advantage of it. Thank God because the situation is critical."

People from all over came today, some people came from way up north above Merida because they can't buy rice or anything else.

There is no coffee and no cooking pots and what we find is very expensive because it's all smuggled in fromhere."

Venezuela is amid a severe economic crisis marked by triple-digit inflation and widespread shortages of food and medicine.

Last week, hundreds of Venezuelan womenbroke past border guards and crossed into Cucuta.

They attempted to buy food and medicine that is either too expensive or cannot be found in Venezuela.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro had closed the border crossing in August 2015 following an attack against border guards.
