James Milner Announces England Retirement

Liverpool midfielder James Milner has retired from international duty after winning 61 England caps.Milner gained 61 caps for England and scored one goal after initially being handed his debut by Fabio Capello in August 2009 at 23 years old.

The Liverpool vice-captain racked up three World Cup appearances for the Three Lions and featured five times at the European Championships, though featuredmore heavily in tournament qualification and his one international goal came against Moldova in a World Cup qualifier in 2012.


During England’s disappointing campaign at Euro 2016 the midfielder featured for just three minutes when his team were held to a 1-1 draw in their opener against Russia and benched for the rest of the tournament.

The former Manchester City man had already indicateda willingness to make way for the next generation and officially called time on his international career after a meeting with manager Sam Allardyce.

The Football Association announced his decision on Friday.AdvertisementIn a statement released by The FA, Milner said: “I wouldlike to thank Sam for taking the time to come and see me in person and have the conversation,“I think the decision we have reached is all about common sense. I wish Sam, the players, staff and supporters success in the future.”

Allardyce then paid tribute to his contribution to the team: “James can be proud of his seven-year career as a senior England player and has never let his country down when called upon,We wish him well with Liverpool this season and beyond.”The England manager said Milner had agreed to still make himself available in exceptional circumstances.
