Martino's Tactics To Blame For Messi Struggles, Claims Edgardo Bauza |PoliFocus

New Argentina coach Edgardo Bauza has pointed to tactical deficiencies under his predecessor Gerardo Martino as the reason for Lionel Messi's struggles at the Copa America.

The Barcelona star announced his retirement from international football following his country's second defeat in the final of the South American competition in two years.

Messi was closely marked by Chile in the match in New Jersey and Bauza does not believe Argentina's system provided him with the supporthe needs to thrive."

If you leave [Messi] alone, we see what happened against Chile, where he had four players on top of him," Bauza toldTyC Sports."

He suffered a lot in that game, and he had problems in generating play. The idea is that the play goes through him, we know how he can change a game.

"Messi has played in three positions: as a central forward, a little deeper, and Guardiola used him insome games on the right."

The intention is that he is placed where he can change things, and for that he needs the participation of the team, we can not depend solely on Messi." -Goal.com
