Kemi Adeosun Accuses Western Countries Of Blocking Nigeria's Coal Power Efforts |PoliFocus

The Federal Government of Nigeria has said that its efforts to improve electricity generation in the country is being hampered by western powers.

Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, while speaking in the United States on Wednesday, at a discussion on theimportance of addressing infrastructure gaps in developing countries at the World Bank, International Monetary Fund General Meetings, stated that the Muhammadu Buhari-led government is focused on improving power supply as a means to develop the economy but decried the fact that western nations have been frustrating their efforts.

According to her, the country desires to use its abundance of coal to generate power but this move is being opposed by western nations who feel it will be a threat to the environment.

“We want to build a coal power plant because we are a country blessed with coal, yet we have power problem. So it doesn’t take a genius to work out that it will make sense to build a coal power plant.

However, we are being blocked from doing so, because it is not green. This is not fair because they have an entire western industrialisation that was built on coal-fired energy.”

“This is the competitive advantage that was used to develop Europe, yet now that Nigeria wants to do it, they say it’s not green, so we cannot.

They suggest thatwe use solar and wind, which is the more expensive. Soyes, Africa must invest in its infrastructure, but we must also make sure that the playing field is level,” she said.
