Today In Plenary: Senate Proceedings For Today 12th of January, 2016

‬Today was the first time the Nigerian Senate sat for this year 2016.

ORDERS OF THE DAY MOTIONS

After the Senate resumed from its Executive Session that lasted for about 1hour 30minutes, the Senate deliberated on a Motion on:

The recent outbreak of Lassa Fever in Nigeria by Senator Olanrewaju Tejuoso representing Ogun Central Senatorial District.

The Senate is aware that Lassa frequently infects people in West Africa and results in 300,000 to 500,000 cases annually, causing about 5,000 deaths each year.

The Senate is concerned that recent outbreaks of the disease have been observed in about 10 States in Nigeria in January, 2016.

The Senate is worried that the total number of suspected cases so far reported is 76 with 35 deaths, and a Case Fatality Rate of 46 per cent as confirmed by the Federal Ministry of Health.

The Senate is worried that our health and corporate agencies emphasize awareness only after the emergencies appear.

The Senate accordingly resolved to:

i. Condole with the families of Nigerians who have lost their relations to the outbreak of this disease.

ii. Commend the Minister of Health for his proactive measures taken so far.

iii. Urge the Federal Government, Health Agencies, non-government organizations, to carry our holistic and aggressive sensitization at markets restaurants, neighborhoods, communities, offices and schools and that the public in States affected and those not affected be educated.

iv. Urge Nigerians to be very conscious and adhere to rules of personal hygiene and put in efforts to get rid of rodents/rats from our environment to prevent the spread of the disease and report anycase of persistent high fever not responding to standard treatment for malaria and typhoid fever to the nearest health center.

Distinguished Senator Shehu Sani added an additional prayer that the Federal Ministry of Health should be encouraged to breed more cats.

The Senate then held a One Minute Silence for the souls of the deceased victims of the‪ Lassa Fever‬ disease.

Senate President Bukola Saraki concluded by asking the Committeeon Health to follow up with the Federal Ministry of Health during its oversight functions.

Senate Leader Ali Ndume moved for Senate to plenary adjourn to Wednesday 13th January 2016. Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio seconded.

Senate President Bukola Saraki then put the question forward. Senate then adjourned plenary to Wednesday 13th January 2016.‪#
