Court Awards £20,000 Compensation To James Ibori's Lawyer |PoliFocus

A British court has ordered that Bhadresh Gohil, lawyer to convicted former governor of Delta state, James Ibori, be paid £20,000 by the Crown Prosecution Service for unlawfully detaining Gohiland depriving him of his rights.


According to the BBC, the prosecution agreed to pay the compensation for detaining Gohil for 33 days between November 20 and December 22, 2015.

Gohil, who was sentenced to 10 years in jail for aiding Ibori launder his money, had served half of his sentence.

However, the prosecution had petitioned for his bail to be revoked.However, Gohil’s legal team argued that the prosecution acted in bad faith by misinforming the court that the unconditional bail was unopposed.

Ibori was sentenced to 13 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to charges of fraud and money laundering.

His case is currently under review by the British government as the defence had claimed that certain important evidence in the case where covered up during Ibori’s trial. -Ynaija
