Opinion: Is It A Crime For Couples To Be Civil Servants In Oyo State? |PoliFocus

Over the weekend I ran into a discussion of two housewives concerning the present state of the nation’s economy.

They blamed the present Governor Ajimobi-led government over its inability to promptly pay the salaries and emoluments of its workforce.

But was stroke my mind was an utterance by one of them, she said "it is very wrong for couples to be civil servants". That they normally suffer when there is delay in payment of salaries.

Though one can ignore the statement but to a large extent, she made a salient point. But the fact is that, the ignoble situation that the masses and civil servants is not unconnected with the extravagant lifestyles and abysmal endemic corruption among the people at the corridor of power.

It is disheartening to hear that close to 27 states in Nigeria at the moment are owing backlogs of salaries! Where did we miss it?

This is not about politics but I think there is more to it. I don't believe that all the governors can be so callous and heartless to the point of willingly owing up to six months salary arrears!

Before now, civil service was a dream of larger percentage of youths but going by the present state of economy, people's love are gradually shifting away from it.

The best work for now is to be self-employed. This will give unequalled and long-lasting job security.

Back to the starving civil servants, most of them are not ready to engage in any entrepreneurship activities, that is why I'm not surprised when I read it that some of them have resulted into indulging in petty thieving.

The one that melted my heart was a man that stole pot of 'Amala' (yam flour) on fire when the owner went inside the house to pick something..... Very hilarious but heartbreaking.

It is not a crime if you have a small poultry at the back of your house, or cultivate a little garden in your free space.

As an housewife, getting yourself into selling some stuffs can go a long way into putting food on the table.

Wake up to reality and get yourself engaged, only God knows when the payment of salaries and arrears will be prompt again in Nigeria.
